Step 6: Set the air gap at 0.025 inches using a feeler gauge.
Most of our handheld engine spark plugs should be gapped at either: A) For 28-32 cc engines, set the gap at 0.020″ (0.5 mm). B) For 38-55 cc engines, set the gap at 0.025″ (0.635 mm).
The gap setting is different for each vehicle but most are somewhere between 0.028″ and . 060″. Consult the owner`s manual or Champion ® catalog to find the recommended setting for the vehicle you`re working on.
The incorrect plug gap for your engine can contribute to a high rate of misfires, loss of power, plug fouling, poor fuel economy and accelerated plug wear. It is always best to check the gap against the manufacturer`s specifications.
The spark plug gap should be set to between 0.028 and 0.030 inches (0.70 to 0.80 mm.)
As a general rule, you should change the spark plug approximately every 100 hours.

If the metal is missing, then the string is breaking because it rubs against plastic and heats up very quickly. Or the tube or grommet might have a rough or sharp spot.
