How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

In general, the smaller you set your spreader setting the smaller the hole and the slower the material releases from the hopper. There are many different brands of spreaders on the market, and, new or old, it is highly recommended to properly calibrate your spreader before the first use in the spring.
First, use the following formula to determine how much fertilizer is needed to apply 0.5 pound N per 1,000 square feet to the turf: pounds of N per 1,000 square feet desired for application ÷ percent of N in fertilizer (in decimal form) = pounds of fertilizer per 1,000 square feet.
So here are the general rules: For fertilizers put the setting a notch or two above half. For example, if there are 20 notches on the spreader, 11-12 would be the setting. You don`t have to cover every square inch of turf to get good results, so if you think that`s too much, drop to a notch below half.
The first number is the amount of nitrogen (N), the second number is the amount of phosphate (P2O5) and the third number is the amount of potash (K2O). These three numbers represent the primary nutrients (nitrogen(N) – phosphorus(P) – potassium(K)). This label, known as the fertilizer grade, is a national standard.
The numbers stand for nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (N-P-K), and they tell you the percentage of those ingredients in the product by weight.
Spreaders should be calibrated for each user. Differences in the height and stride of users create varying walking speeds that can cause differences in the rate of application. As walking speed increases, the rate of application decreases. Inversely, as walking speed decreases, the rate of application increases.
The numbers stand for an application rate. A bag of commercial fertilizer will usually have numbers for where to set either broadcast or drop spreaders to get the recommended amount of fertilizer laid down. The numbers on the bag may be different for various brands of spreaders.
For more substantial areas—up to 15,000 square feet—the Scotts® Turf Builder® Edgeguard® DLX Broadcast Spreader, with its large hopper, is ideal. If you`re lucky enough to have an extra large lawn, use the Scotts® Elite Spreader. The hopper can hold enough product to cover 20,000 square feet.
According to Scotts, the Turf Builder Lawn Food (North) requires the drop spreader to be set at setting 7 for effective application.
It`s important to note that the Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium numbers on your fertilizer are percentages. For instance, a bag labeled with “23-3-8” will contain 23% Nitrogen, 3% phosphorus, and 8% Potassium. Together, these percentages show the fertilizer`s “N-P-K ratio”.
The three types of lawn spreaders are scoop-style spreaders, broadcast spreaders and handheld spreaders. Handheld spreaders distribute fertilizer, seeds or ice melt over small areas. Broadcast-type handheld spreaders have a small hopper, handle, dial and crank. Some models offer adjustable arm support.
All-Purpose Fertilizer 10-10-10 is great for your vegetable garden, shrubs, trees or flower beds. The fast-release formula feeds your plants for up to 2 weeks. It is recommended that you re-apply the fertilizer every 30 days during the growing season to help give your plants the nutrients they need to grow.
The “effective” swath width (the measured distance from the center that is associated with the majority of the released material distributed from the spreader) is twice the distance out from the center of the spreader to the point where the rate is one half the average rate at the center.
One 4.3 lbs. bag covers up to 1,000 sq. ft.
A: Scotts Turf Builder Lawn Fertilizer has an NPK is 32-0-4. Total Nitrogen is 32%, 4.9% Ammoniacal Nitrogen, 15.1% Urea Nitrogen, 11.0% Other Water Soluble Nitrogen*, 1.0% Water insoluble nitrogen*, Soluble Potash (K2O) 4%, Sulfur (S) 7%, 7.0% combined sulfur, Iron** 2%.
One 4.3 lbs. bag covers up to 1,000 sq. ft.
According to Scotts, the Turf Builder Lawn Food (North) requires the drop spreader to be set at setting 7 for effective application.
