time I go to mow the lawn.It takes me about half an hour of pulling the starter cord and adjusting the fuel lever to various positions starting with the choke position to a very low throttle position.I clean the spark plug.At the low position it kicks for a few ignitions then stops. Then all of a sudden it starts about half way from full throttle to stop.Once it goes I have no further problems.
I cannot find where the fuel can be turned off once I finish mowing.
I would appreciate your advice on how to fix the problem.

Hi all. Thanks for all of your input, I had the same problem with my Scott Bonnar sx4000 and was ready to throw it in the bin but I thought I would have one last crack at fixing it – which I managed to do.I could never get the mower to start easily even when it was brand new. It would take at least 30 pulls on the cable. As time went on it became even harder and harder to start. In the end it wouldn’t start at all. I tried pouring fuel into the carb which would get the thing started but then it would die after 30-90 seconds.I took the carb off and I checked the fuel float bowl for debris but it was clean, however I noticed that the fuel float was stuck in the up position. I just pushed on the fuel float with my finger and it then began to move freely.I also adjusted the carb fuel/air mix knob a per Paul-ftp’s suggestion and now the mower starts first time every time. Thanks for all your help guys!

This first mower was primarily designed to cut grass on sports grounds, cemeteries, and extensive gardens. Pushed from behind and made of wrought iron, Buddigs first machine was 19 inches wide.
Especially, when you haven`t taken care of it for a while, due to a busy schedule, staying away from home, or a myriad of other reasons. This results in growth of tall grass which is hard to cut, that if left, can lead to a lot of problems that affect the health and appearance of the lawn.

Other possible causes include: Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas.

Mower start up and runs, but starts to cut back, and smokes just a little bit. The mower stops smoking when it throttle up. It will continue to run but not at full throttle. I can hold a finger gently over the fuel primer bulb and it will throttle up for a small time.
ANSWER : It sounds like she’s being deprived of the correct fuel / air mixture due to a dirty carburetor (the biggest problem with mowers when gas is left to sit for a period of time). If you do not know how to take the carburetor apart and clean it thoroughly, then I suggest taking it to the local shop (hardware store or mower shop) and having it tuned up. It’ll probably be just fine and worth the money. Hope this helps and good luck.James

What to do when craftsman mower pull cord won’t recoil?
ANSWER : Sounds like the spring inside the recoil has either broken or let go so it won’t recoil. If you are lucky it could be the wheel that the cord goes on is seized or stuck. You can take the recoil off most mowers by taking out two or three screws and lifting it off the engine. They can be repaired but it takes time having to be careful the spring won’t spin and hurt you. I have even taken a recoil off another engine and if the holes for the little screws don’t line up just drill little holes beside the old ones and reinstall the little screws.
I even used a 18 volt cordless drill to crank the engine using the bolt on the fly wheel and the right size socket. Leaving the recoil off You have an electric start that way.

I have a Lawn Boy 10685. Changed the blade and went to start the mower and the pull cord will not pull. I tried spinning the blade by hand with no luck. I took the starter apart and it spins fine. I check the brake cord and it looks fine. Any other suggestions?
ANSWER : Remove the spark plug and try pulling the starter again. You may have a fuel leakage into the cylinder and it has caused a hydraulic lock. Check/change the needle and seat in the carb as this leaking is the usual cause if this type of problem. Good luck and please rate this solution.
