How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Scott Bonnar is a brand now known as Rover Mowers Limited and is now operating under the division of MTD Products Australia Pty Ltd.
A secondhand Scott Bonnar 45 is a great option for these grass types because you can get custom rollers that allow you to cut up to 50mm. It`s hard to find a reel mower that will cut at this height without modification. You can get these grass types below 30mm, but it just takes a lot of time and commitment.
Australian manufacturers from Adelaide, South Australia. This firm was making mowers by the mid-1930s and in 1943 were recipients of an order by the Australian Army. Many of their models were electric but some were fitted with a Buzacott hopper-cooled petrol engine similar to the British Lister “D”.
1830: The first lawn mower was invented and patented in 1830 by Edwin Budding outside Gloucestershire, England. This first mower was primarily designed to cut grass on sports grounds, cemeteries, and extensive gardens. Pushed from behind and made of wrought iron, Buddigs first machine was 19 inches wide.
The big question is, “how tall is too tall?” It depends on your grass species and how strong your motor is, but you can typically get 12-inch tall grass back under control with a lawn mower. Mowers with more powerful engines can even do a bit more.
Especially, when you haven`t taken care of it for a while, due to a busy schedule, staying away from home, or a myriad of other reasons. This results in growth of tall grass which is hard to cut, that if left, can lead to a lot of problems that affect the health and appearance of the lawn.

This scissor action gives the sharpest cut to the blade of grass. This means the plant is less traumatised, giving less bleeding, quicker recovery, less brown tips at the injury, less water loss and therefore the grass plant is less susceptible to disease.

Environmentalists tout reel mowers as a clean alternative to polluting gas-powered rotary models. Reel mowers also reduce noise pollution. A reel mower is safer to use because the blades stop when you stop pushing, They are less expensive to purchase and maintain than gas or electric mowers.
Briggs & Stratton Corporation is an American manufacturer of gasoline engines with headquarters in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, U.S.
Sharpening will also be required if the reel is “cone shaped” (tapered) or “rifled”. All reels eventually become tapered with use. If the reel is not adjusted or ground to a cylinder shape again, a mismatch in the height cut between adjacent reels can result.
Contact mowers like the Scotts, American, Great States and most others require sharpening on the average of every 1-2 years and spring is the best time to do this. You can purchase a do-it-yourself sharpening kit and sharpen your own reel mower or send it in to the shop.
Along with Cub Cadet, Troy-Bilt, Columbia and Remington, the MTD family of brands includes MTD®, MTD Gold®, MTD Pro®, Yard-Man®, Yard Machines® and Bolens®.
Related brands: John Deere. The Scotts/Miracle Gro company sold a line of Scotts branded tractors, all built by other maufacturers. The final line of Scotts lawn tractors were built by John Deere. These same models were later sold as Sabre brand tractors by Deere.

Lawn mower cranck but wont start…
ANSWER : Since you already checked for spark and air I would drain all the fuel out of it and check that fuel for water. Over time some lawn mowers end up with contaminated fuel. You can see the water sitting on the bottom of the fuel if you let it stand for a bit in a small plastic bowl.

Be sure to empty and dry out you fuel can as well. Especially if the mower stopped running right after a refuel. Which is a good sign your gas can is contaminated too.

Wheels won’t engage the reel of the mower.
ANSWER : Pop the cover off the center of the wheel with a small flat-blade screwdriver.
Pry the lock ring off the axle, again with the flat-blade screwdriver.
Lift the wheel off.

The small gear (pinion) lifts off of its axle. You may just need to lubricate the pinion gear and the little bar of metal that it engages. If the pinion is damaged, buy new ones; they’re pretty cheap.

When reassembling, the lockring is easily clicked back on with a pair of pliers.

I found some replacements at The parts number for the pinion gear is 30737-2, 30737-3 (left and right) for the Scotts Classic. You can find the owner’s manual, with part numbers, here:
