How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

A clogged carburetor is most commonly caused by leaving fuel in the lawn mower for a long period of time. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the carburetor and cause the engine to stall.
A Briggs and Stratton lawn mower engine can become locked up due to a variety of reasons. Common causes of this type of engine lock-up include a lack of oil in the engine, incorrect fuel and spark plug misfiring.
If the engine dies when the blades engage, it could be the result of a damaged safety switch. The first step in assessing the safety switch is to make sure it is plugged in securely. The switch is located underneath the seat, and you may have to remove the seat to reach it.
Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas. If this doesn`t work, you might need a new fuel filter.
A full gas tank and oil reservoir are the essential first steps when checking why the lawn mower won`t stay running, but the problem could also be a dirty filter, clogged carburetor, improper fuel mixture, or a dirty spark plug.
An engine can seize due to running on low/no oil, overheating or succumbing to a broken timing belt. These conditions eventually stop your engine in its tracks and a professional technician will be required to restore function.
What happens when an engine locks up while driving? It will suddenly sound rough and stop on its own. Seized engines due to lack of oil can range from a little engine damage to major damage. An engine can seize from not running, too.
At some point in time, nearly every lawnmower owner will be pushing the mower along and suddenly hear it sputter as the engine stops. One of the most common causes is a dirty filter.
Water in the engine is a killer.” Smart move: At the end of the season, take 10 minutes to drain the tank or run the engine dry. Never change or add oil. Moving metal parts need oil, and an engine that`s denied clean oil, and enough of it, will overheat for sure.
As the fuel level drops, a vacuum begins to form in the fuel tank because air can get in to fill the space the consumed fuel occupied. After about 10 or 15 minutes, the vacuum will become strong enough that fuel will stop flowing to the carburetor and the lawnmower will die.
The most common cause of a mower that runs for thirty minutes and then dies is a faulty armature. A faulty gas cap is the second most likely cause.

This is a cub cadet zero turn 2007 model

The problem: electronics will not engage.

The unit was mowing and running when I moved to another location and started the mower it started fine.

Unloaded and went to engage the blades but they would not engage. Got off the machine to check things out belts etc. were OK got back on the machine and it wouldn’t start even the hour meter failed to light up.

Battery is fully charged, I can take a screw driver and “jump” the leads at the seleniod and get the engine to turn over, but not start.

I just need to know where to start looking for the problem. I though about hard wiring the safety switches starting with the seat.

ANSWER : Have you tried moving your brake lever around, if it do,s not make contact with the saftey switch nothing will operate

What should the resistance be of a pto clutch be
ANSWER : Rather than checking the resistance, it it better to apply 12Volts to the connectors to see if there is any activity like a spark when connecting and disconnecting and the feel or sound of the electromagnet engaging. If the belt is off and the engine stopped, then you can feel the resistance to the pulley when voltage applied to the connector.
