e not tightened up, nor is there grass or weeds tangled in the blades. How can I loosen the pull starter.

Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
To start the engine you must depress the flywheel brake lever, located on the top of the handle of the mower. The cable could be broken or seized disallowing you to disengage the brake. It’s designed for safety reasons so that when you release the handle the engine will stop suddenly. Also, if that isn’t the problem, another possibility-kinda far fetched-is that the coil has come loose and has sucked against the flywheel magnet disallowing you to crank the engine. It’s located under the engine shroud. One more possibility…..God forbid….the engine was ran hard without enough oil in the crankcase and is seized. Hope

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Disconnected, dirty or fouled spark plugs are common causes for engines that won`t start. For small engines, spark plugs typically need to be replaced every season or after 25 hours of use. You should also check to make sure the spark plug gap is set correctly.
A Briggs and Stratton lawn mower engine can become locked up due to a variety of reasons. Common causes of this type of engine lock-up include a lack of oil in the engine, incorrect fuel and spark plug misfiring.
Your lawn mower turning over but not starting due to several reasons, such as a faulty or disconnected plug, a disconnected spark plug wire, a clogged air filter, or a contaminated fuel tank. A faulty carburetor, a dirty cutting deck, or a dysfunctional flywheel brake can also cause this.
Your Mower Won`t Start:

Other possible causes include: Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas.

If your Briggs & Stratton engine has a spark but won`t run, then it is most likely a problem with the gas or air intake in the engine. The spark on the spark plug ignites the gas in the piston, but if the air filter is clogged or the gas can`t flow, then the engine won`t start.
Electric start (also known as key start or push button start) is a lawnmower feature found on petrol lawnmowers, which allows you to start the engine at the push of a button or the turn of a key instead of pulling a recoil starter rope.
Every petrol lawn mower owner will experience this issue at some point: The starter cord won`t pull or is very hard to pull. This problem is usually caused by the engagement of the engine flywheel brake. Check to see if the flywheel brake is pressing against the handle before pulling the rope again.
Snowblower pull cord commonly snaps back because the flywheel shear key has broken. The shear key helps maintain the flywheel crankshaft relationship. When the shear key breaks, the engine timing is off, which causes the pull cord to snap back sharply.
