Hi Tom:
Sounds like you’ll need to confirm that you have spark at the plug, and that fuel is being delivered thru the carb.
Try this:
1) Pull the spark plug, connect the lead, ground the plug against the head, and spin it over. Look for a hot blue spark at the plug electrode. If no spark, chase that problem. If spark, re-install plug and then,
2) Pull air filter, prime the carb with a bit of gas, try to start. It should run. If it then dies, the carb needs a really good clean.

If it sat for some time before the problem started, stale gas may be the cause of the problem.

Hope this helps.

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Air pockets: When the fuel filter is replaced, it can create air pockets in the fuel system, which can prevent the engine from starting. To fix this, the air pockets need to be removed by bleeding the fuel system or using a priming pump.
If you pull the cord and hear your engine turn over, but your mower is not starting, the most common reasons for this are low fuel, a broken gas valve, or a bad choke fault. A broker spark plug could also be the culprit. You may also have to change the fuel pump if it does not get fuel to the ignition system.
If the plug is clean or you`ve replaced it and the mower still won`t start, the issue could be a lack of fuel. Either the carburetor is dirty and not able to mist the fuel to be mixed with incoming air, or no gas is getting to it to begin with.
You have a hard time starting car. If the problem is the fuel filter, and it isn`t changed soon, you may find that your vehicle won`t start at all. Misfire or rough idle. A dirty fuel filter could prevent the engine from getting enough fuel.
If your Briggs & Stratton engine has a spark but won`t run, then it is most likely a problem with the gas or air intake in the engine. The spark on the spark plug ignites the gas in the piston, but if the air filter is clogged or the gas can`t flow, then the engine won`t start.
Disconnected, dirty or fouled spark plugs are common causes for engines that won`t start. For small engines, spark plugs typically need to be replaced every season or after 25 hours of use. You should also check to make sure the spark plug gap is set correctly.
Priming the Fuel Filter Manually

When changing out a fuel filter, it becomes necessary to remove any air bubbles that have been introduced into your fuel system. Additionally, you need to prime the fuel filter to ensure fuel is circulating in your fuel system once again.

After the new fuel filter is installed, reconnect the negative terminal on your car battery, and reattach the fuel pump fuse/relay. Start your engine and let it run for a few minutes, checking to make sure that no fuel is leaking from your system.
1 Answer. No, you shouldn`t need to bleed a petrol system. If it was diesel, some require bleeding, because air pockets can act like cavitation points and it won`t pump the fuel.
A dirty or fouled spark plug can cause your lawn mower to not start. It can also work itself loose, causing issues. If the spark plug appears to be seated correctly but the engine doesn`t start, a new one may be in order. For a few dollars, this easy fix can get your small engine working again.
Such could be due to a big vacuum leak, an air induction fault like a stuck idle air control valve or, considering fuel, could be due to a failed temperature sensor that must be working properly to signal the PCM to enrich the mixture on cold start. Other common faults are defective spark plugs or a defective coil.
Stalling: If a clogged fuel filter goes unaddressed for too long, it may eventually cause the engine to stall as ideal fuel flow dwindles.

Have a craftsman 16″ chain saw 358.360260. Could not initially get it started after it had sat for a couple years with fuel stabilizer in it. When I went to use it the fuel had all evaporated and the fuel pick line was rotted. I replaced that with some difficulty but finally got it on. Saw still wouldn’t start. Replaced the fuel filter. Still wouldn’t start. Pulled the carb apart and cleaned and recleaned everything. Diaphragms were good and I didn’t adjust any of the mixture screws because as I said it ran fine before storage. Non of the carb passages were clogged. Fresh gas 40:1, good spark plug and good spark. Airfilter is good. Engine has maybe about 4 hours of total run time on it. It’s a ZAMA (?) carb. It will run for about 30 seconds when I manually prime it by pouring a small amount of fuel directly though the carb. When I was disassembling the carb the vent hose that goes back into the fuel tank seemed to have a small out of ?substance? in it which I cleaned out. It was right at the end the of the hose that goes back into the fuel tank and not up by the carb. It didn’t appear to be like your typical gummy deposits/varnish though. I hope it wasn?t some type of spongy check valve stuff that is supposed to be in there. That might explain some of my problems. Anyway, I also can not seem to get the primer bulb to fill. When I open the fuel tank, look in side and depress the primer bulb, air bubbles come out of the fuel filter. But when I let the bulb reexpand there’s no fuel that gets sucked up the hose. I can however seem to fill the primer bulb when the fuel tank is full and the chainsaw is laying on it?s pull cord side and the bulb is depressed a bunch of times. The saw will also start and run again for about 15 seconds then die. It’s definitely not getting/fuel and probably running out . Thanks.
