The most common cause of a leaking axle seal is improper axle installation or removal but the axle seal can also wear out over time. If you`re concerned that your axle seal might be leaking, here are a few things to look out for: Oil drops below your vehicle after it has been parked.
If there is significant fluid loss, so much that it affects the transmission, the vehicle should not be driven. If the leak is small and you can`t make it to an appointment for a few days, it is okay to drive your vehicle as long as you keep the transmission fluid full.
The average cost for an Axle Shaft Seal Replacement is between $250 and $305. Labor costs are estimated between $210 and $265 while parts are priced between $40 and $40.
When a CV joint axle fails completely, it will render the car immobile, since the transfer of power to the wheels can no longer be completed. So when you hear those warning noises, or are told that your CV axle boot is leaking, it is a good idea to get the axles replaced as soon as possible.

Rear axle when taking off back tire rear axle came off too. How do i put it back on. how do i take the transaxle apart to replace lower casing? i have a sears craftsman 18hp 38 inch cut rider…any ideas would be great…thanks
ANSWER : I’m guessing the wheel was rusted to the axle and you tried to get it off with a little help from a two-by-four and a sledge, right? there is a spring clip that holds the axle in place, it is on the inside of the trans. did the lower casing crack? the trans will have to be removed and set up on a roomy bench, about 20 bolts holding the cases together, then careful prying on specific areas and the cases come apart, carefully. otherwise, gears and shafts fall out and if you don’t know where they go, you’re up the creek. not an easy job, especially if you’re not mechanically inclined. a tip: order the parts you need before tearing into it, or the weeks you wait for the order, you’ll likely forget how everything goes together – take it to a good shop or get another trans
