Hi and welcome to FiXya I am Kelly.

Your pilot light burning yellow is a sign of a dirty orifice. This can be caused by insects or a spider web in the pilot air supply.
To clean the air supply / orifice area see this page:

http://www.nexgrill.net/trouble/p1.5.html

Also the thermocouple may not be close enough to the flame. You won’t know this for sure until you finish cleaning the pilot / orifice area.

This link has step by step links for all of the components / causes of a pilot not staying lit. Click each of them and it will bring up a pdf file with step by step instructions and pictures:

A bad thermocouple can also cause this. Givien you have a yellow flame I do not think this is your problem. But if it ends not staying lit after cleaning see this page on how to get to the thermocouple:

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Take your tank and get it refilled. Yet another reason your patio will not stay lit is that the gas valve orifice is blocked. You should clean the orifice or have it replaced. Sometimes there is air in the gas line which is blocking propane from getting to the heater head unit.
If your pilot light won`t stay alight, it might be the thermocouple. Sometimes dust buildup collects on the thermocouple and blocks the sensor. Try cleaning the thermocouple and then relighting the pilot light. If it continues to go out, the thermocouple might need to be replaced.
Check for debris around the patio heater burner pilot and clean out insects and ensure the area is clean and dry. There may be low fuel pressure, ensure the gas cylinder has sufficient fuel and is turned ON at the regulator. Ensure the regulator is not worn and working OK.
Clean or replace the igniter.

Most patio heaters have an igniter that lights the pilot light. This can get worn out and dirty over time. Try lighting your patio heater with a lighter to see if it works. If it does, then you might have a problem with the igniter.

If the flame sensor is dirty or has become corroded, the flame won`t register and will turn off the gas valve, which, in turn, causes your system to shut down. You will need to contact a professional to check this, especially if your furnace is cycling on and off too quickly.
Your Gas Valve Needs Attention

The gas valve on your furnace delivers the gas your pilot light needs to remain lit. If the valve is turned ON, but your pilot light won`t stay lit, the problem might be a broken gas valve. The solution most likely will be to replace the valve.

Buildup of Dirt or Debris Around the Pilot Light – Over the years it`s easy for dust, debris, and dirt to build up on the inside of the intake valve where the pilot light resides. This makes it difficult for the flame to “breathe” and as a result causes the pilot light to go out suddenly.
Reset the regulator to allow gas to flow back into the patio heater burner. To reset the regulator, turn the heater off and disconnect the regulator from the tank. Wait for 30 seconds and reconnect the hose and regulator to the tank. Turn on the propane tank, turning the knob VERY slowly and only a ¼ turn.
The pilot light is a small, blue flame that is used to ignite the natural gas being pumped into the main burner. Whenever your furnace turns on to heat your home gas is released through a valve, where it comes in contact with the pilot light and is ignited, producing heat.
If the pilot flame ignites but goes out after you release the gas control knob, the cause may be a dirty or defective thermocouple. If the gas is on but the flame will not ignite at all, a pilot tube obstruction is the most likely issue.
Delayed ignition can be caused by a range of problems, including a restricted or weak pilot light. Also, low gas supply pressure can mean that there is too little gas at the burners, resulting in ignition problems. Another possible cause is too much primary air. This is air that`s mixed with gas before it`s ignited.
If the thermocouple is too far from the flame, this can cause the pilot to go out and shut down the propane heater; you can fix this easily by moving the thermocouple closer to the flame. The thermocouple could also be worn out, in which case it needs to be replaced.
