How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?
We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :
If the lawn mower leaks gas the carburetor bowl gasket on the bottom of the carburetor might be dried out or missing. If the leak is coming from the bottom of the carburetor, try replacing the carburetor bowl gasket.
Clean the Tank and the Carburetor: A canister of carburetor cleaner can be used to clean the tank. The cleaner should be sprayed into the outtake hole of the gas tank fuel line. The interior of the tank should also be thoroughly sprayed.
Lawn mowers are built to withstand the abuse that comes from the tasks it performs. The build-up of dirt, mud, and grime that accumulates from using your mower can be easily cleaned with a blast from a pressure washer.
Gas leaks around the lawn mower air filter can indicate your engine valves are not working properly. If your engine has a fuel shut-off valve, ensure that this valve is closed when the engine is not in use.
You can tell if your engine`s flooded when you spot these signs: Very fast cranking (the engine sounds different when you turn the key – usually a `whirring` sound) A strong smell of petrol, especially around the exhaust.
An engine that`s getting gas and not starting probably has a flooded carburetor or cylinder soaked with gasoline. Often your nose can make the diagnosis: Flooded engines reek of unburned fuel. Park the mower on level ground, and wait about 15 minutes for the gas to evaporate.
Use Carburetor Cleaner
Fortunately, you can generally do this without even taking the carburetor out of the engine. Start by purchasing some commercial lawnmower carburetor cleanerOpens a new window, which comes in a simple spray can and will make it easy to clean the inside and outside of the carb.
Rinse all carburetor components in a bucket of clean water, and allow to air dry completely. For small holes and vents, use a can of compressed air to remove any excess moisture. Reassemble and replace.
The fuel and air will not mix as well as when your carburetor is balanced. This results in oil and gas spills from the exhaust of the lawn mower. The next time you see black liquid coming out of lawn mower exhaust vents, then this could be due to an imbalanced carburetor.
Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas. If this doesn`t work, you might need a new fuel filter.

I would recommend that you check your fuel filter to see if it is dirty/clogged, check you spark plug to see if it is getting fire. Replace either if needed. If you are not getting spark there are only a few things that it could be, either a coil, pick up coil, or magneto.
