If it`s clogged, the combustion chamber may not be getting enough oxygen, resulting in a too-rich fuel mixture that will cause the engine to run poorly and even spew smoke. The solution is to change the air filter, a relatively easy task. Blue and white smoke is the result of oil on the engine.
There are at least four different colours, each telling a different story. White smoke always means unburned fuel. The compression doesn`t get the fuel hot enough to burn completely when the engine is cold. However, this should not happen at operating temperature.
White or blue smoke may indicate an oil spill on the engine.

If you`ve recently changed the oil in your mower and the engine is emitting white or blue smoke, it`s possible that some of the oil spilled onto the engine.

A faulty or dirty spark plug could be the reason your lawn mower won`t stay running. It might produce the initial spark, but the spark won`t be enough to keep the engine running if the plug is clogged with dirt and oil. Spark plugs are usually located on the front of a push lawn mower and connected to a black cable.
A dirty air filter inhibits the flow of air into the carburetor. Clean or replace the air filter to stop the mower from sputtering to a halt. Too much air can also cause problems for the engine. A bad cap on the gas tank is the first place to look.
White Exhaust Smoke

White smoke billowing out of your exhaust means that coolant is likely leaking into the cylinders. This usually happens when there has been a breach in the head gasket, which makes the coolant create this white steam.

This is usually brought on by low fuel octane, oil contamination in the air/fuel charge, or excessive boost or nitrous injection in high-performance engines. It can also be caused by poorly performed repairs, a clogged injector, clogged fuel filter, or a marginally failing fuel pump.
To fix blue or gray smoke: The easy way is to add a bottle of Motor Honey Oil Treatment to your motor oil with each oil change. It`s specially designed to reduce oil burning and stop smoky exhausts. The hard way is an engine overhaul, which is about a hundred times more expensive and a thousand times more work.

In extreme cases, you will need to replace your head gasket. At the first sign of white smoke you can try head gasket repair treatment to seal the leak before you do serious damage to your engine.

The most common cause of black smoke is a clogged air filter. Replace your mower`s air filter and this should resolve the problem. If you`re still seeing smoke, the air-to-fuel ratio may be off, in which case the lawn mower`s carburettor might need to be adjusted (ideally by a lawn mower repair specialist).
The white smoke is the engine burning off all the excess oil. The fix – drain the excessive oil, and idle the engine until the smoke clears. This may take 5 minutes or so. Too much oil will cause other problems, smoke, poor running, no running, leaks, engine damage.
Remove the cap and check the gas tank for evidence of water (if you see the liquid separating or looking like two different colors). If there is water in your tank, siphon or drain it, then add new gas. After old gas in the line works its way through the mower`s engine it should stop sputtering and run like new again.

ANSWER : Check the coil impedance on the primary and secondary side. You’ll have to disconnect the battery negative cable so you don’t short something out. Unplug the spark plug wires and the two sets of smaller wires connected to the primary side of the coil. The primary coil reading should be between 3.7 ohms and 4.6 ohms while the secondary (spark plug side) should be between 34.2 k-ohms and 41.6 k-ohms. If the resistance values you measure are outside of these ranges, you need to replace the coil.
