How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

The most common cause of this problem is that the belt has become too loose and is not properly tensioned. To fix this issue, you should first check to make sure that the belt is the correct size for your mower. If it is, then you should adjust the tension on the belt to make sure that it is snug and secure.
Belt slipping off tensioner pulley is a common issue that can occur with any type of belt-driven system. The most likely cause is that the tensioner pulley itself is worn out or damaged. In some cases, the problem may also be caused by a misaligned pulley or by a loose belt.
A common cause of belt breakage is excessive grass clippings on the deck. Grass clippings can work their way under pulleys and deck covers, causing series problems. Make sure to clean off your deck after every mower use and follow manufacturer recommendations.
If the belt starts to slip, the battery can discharge over time. A discharging battery is more likely to happen at night when your lights are on or in the winter when you`re running the heat in your car.
A perfectly tight mower belt can rotate without slipping off but not cause the engine to over-exert and overheat. If the belt does not slip off while working and is not producing unfavorable sounds that indicate wearing off of the belt, then that is the perfect tightness for it.
Look for the belt, which is usually found in the lawn mower deck. Check the pulleys that the mower drive belt rides on. Place your hand on the belt and push the belt down and toward the pulleys. Check on how the belt gives way to your pressure; it should not be loose enough to give way more than a few inches.

Starting will not start
ANSWER : Pull the air cleaner and check for obstructions, dirt, oil etc. Leave off and try to start. Check plug for oil or wetness from fuel. Have a spare handy to check for spark. A shot of instant start into the air cleaner housing might help if the mower has bad or old fuel. You should drain the fuel out if it over a month old and unpreserved. Also, if the mower has been sitting with fuel in it the main jet sometimes gets clogged up due to todays alcohol enhanced fuels. You should get some help with removing the main jet and cleaning it out.

I have a Crafstman Riding mower model #917.273643. That ran fine one second, I shut it off for five minutes. When I went to start it back up it wouldn’t start. Cranks fine, checked the wires, fuse, and spark plug. The plug was dirty so I cleaned it. But I am not getting any spark. I bought a new plug still no spark. I also checked the plug on another motor and I had spark so the plug wasn’t bad. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this or what may be wrong?
ANSWER : Sounds like your coil went bad
