How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?
We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :
A problem with the drivetrain, typically along the flexible drive shaft, is a common culprit when an auger won`t turn. To pinpoint the problem, start by examining the end fittings for cracks or breaks. If there are broken wires or sharp kinks, it`s time to replace the shaft housing.
Damaged blades on the auger will prevent it from properly cutting through the ground and moving the dirt up and out of the hole. Dull blades or a damaged fishtail point will also prevent the post hole digger auger from cutting through the soil. A local small engine shop or the factory can sharpen the blade on an auger.
Sometimes, when you`re drilling through a harder surface or drier ground, your auger can get stuck. Pouring some water around the hole will allow the soil to loosen around the tool, giving you more wiggle room to slide it out.
Whether powered by a tractor PTO, an electric motor or a gas engine, an auger`s ability to move grain depends on its diameter. On the smaller end of the spectrum, an 8″ or 10″ auger requires a minimum of 50 PTO hp to 60 PTO hp, Giesbrecht says. On the larger end, a 16″-diameter, 125` auger needs up to 250 PTO hp.
What causes compacted soil? Soil compaction happens when air pockets in between the components of the soil collapse. This can be caused by pressure from foot traffic or heavy machinery. Then there is the lack of organic material, which can cause soil to clump and settle together, becoming denser.
We recommend using a drilling bucket auger when faced with wet and muddy soil conditions because the bucket will make removing the mix of drilling fluid from the borehole easier. Without the bucket, the mud and liquid will fall back into the hole, making it nearly impossible to extract.
Tighten the Thumbscrew
If you hit an obstacle and the cable will not rotate, the thumbscrew likely needs to be tightened. A handle on the side of the snake drum has a place for you to insert a corkscrew and tighten the drain auger. Tighten the auger as much as you can before continuing to snake.
Other repulsive smells groundhogs may detest include garlic, lavender, and cayenne pepper. Place these smells near your garden plants to make your veggies less inviting. Sprinkle Epsom salts, blood meal, or talcum powder around the burrow. Place a rag soaked in ammonia near the groundhog`s burrow entrance.
On a cool grill, remove the grates, drip pan, heat baffle/shield, and hopper to see the auger parts. If the auger has pellets stuck inside the auger shaft and is not turning, it is most likely jammed.
A broken shear pin is the most common reason the snowblower auger won`t turn properly so replace any broken shear pins. Worn or loose belts also prevent the snowblower auger from spinning. Check and adjust the belts and replace any broken or worn belts when you see the snowblower auger not turning.

Have a craftsman 16″ chain saw 358.360260. Could not initially get it started after it had sat for a couple years with fuel stabilizer in it. When I went to use it the fuel had all evaporated and the fuel pick line was rotted. I replaced that with some difficulty but finally got it on. Saw still wouldn’t start. Replaced the fuel filter. Still wouldn’t start. Pulled the carb apart and cleaned and recleaned everything. Diaphragms were good and I didn’t adjust any of the mixture screws because as I said it ran fine before storage. Non of the carb passages were clogged. Fresh gas 40:1, good spark plug and good spark. Airfilter is good. Engine has maybe about 4 hours of total run time on it. It’s a ZAMA (?) carb. It will run for about 30 seconds when I manually prime it by pouring a small amount of fuel directly though the carb. When I was disassembling the carb the vent hose that goes back into the fuel tank seemed to have a small out of ?substance? in it which I cleaned out. It was right at the end the of the hose that goes back into the fuel tank and not up by the carb. It didn’t appear to be like your typical gummy deposits/varnish though. I hope it wasn?t some type of spongy check valve stuff that is supposed to be in there. That might explain some of my problems. Anyway, I also can not seem to get the primer bulb to fill. When I open the fuel tank, look in side and depress the primer bulb, air bubbles come out of the fuel filter. But when I let the bulb reexpand there’s no fuel that gets sucked up the hose. I can however seem to fill the primer bulb when the fuel tank is full and the chainsaw is laying on it?s pull cord side and the bulb is depressed a bunch of times. The saw will also start and run again for about 15 seconds then die. It’s definitely not getting/fuel and probably running out . Thanks.
I have a Ground Hog 1M5C earth digger and it doesn’t seem to get fuel to the engine. Fuel is coming into the carburetor, but it doesn’t seem to get sucked into the engine from there. What is the next step to fix this problem?
Thanks!
I have a John Deere L118 Limited Edition (w/ 20 HP B&S engine), which I purchased about 8 years ago. It ran well with few problems up to late this summer. I believe the problem started when I accidentally filled the tank with some stale gasoline – the tractor turned over, but would not start. I drained the fuel tank and filled it with fresh gas, but it still would not start. When I use starter fluid, the tractor starts for 4-5 seconds, and then cuts off. I installed a new fuel filter. The connections in the fuel line seem tight, so while the problem might be the vacuum fuel pump itself, I do not think it is due to a leak in the line. I disconnected the fuel line at the carburetor — fuel flows through the line at start up. But when I put the fuel line directly into the air intake (with some starting fluid), the engine still cuts off in about 4 seconds. I am not sure if the pump simply is not drawing enough fuel into the carburetor. I understand that, if it is a problem with a safety cut-off, the engine would not start at all (even for 4 seconds). My thought was that the problem may be a gummed up carburetor, but that would not explain why the tractor does not start when I feed fuel directly into the carburetor. Any thoughts about other things I can try before bringing the tractor to a mechanic?
ANSWER : Just take the carb bowl off its easy one bolt on the bottom of it get the old gas out flush all old gas out of tank and line then it will run trust me i know
42cc 2cycle poulan chain saw does not start spark plug fires has fuel, fuel in fuel lines seems there is some blow-back in the carb when I turn the engine over don’t know much about chain saw motors, if this was a marine 2-cycle outboard I would suspect the reed valve had failed. See no reed valve in the parts list from Poulan. Suspect one of the carburetor “gaskets” performs this function (the vitally important one-way valve into the crankcase that forces fuel to move from the carburetor into the crankcase and ultimately into the cylinder in a 2-stroke engine). 1) What performs the function of the reed valve in a 2 cycle chain saw engine? Is it a carburetor gasket/part of some sort? 2) Will ordering a set of carburetor gaskets from Poulan fix this problem? (they have 2 items called “kit-carb” in the parts manual, no additional specification). Thanks
ANSWER : Here is a Link to a couple of my Tips. They should solve your problems:www.fixya.com/support/r6081405-cleaning_small_engie_carburetorI don’t know anything about outboard motors, so I can’t answer the reed valve question. There is a needle valve on the diaphragm side of the carburetor though. Maybe these two parts perform that operation.Good Luck!Jim
My Honda 160cc lawn mower engine cut out when I hit a large clump of grass. Now I cannot get it to start. Has always started with no problems. What to do?
ANSWER : Has probably broken flywheel key ….. putting it out of time
Why will my1994 bravada not start?
ANSWER : Very possible your new pump went out again, or was not installed correctly. Check fuel pressure. If you know electrical you can jumper the relay to run the pump. On some GM models I have seen a test wire for the pump underhood.

ANSWER : Is there a pressure regulator on the fuel rail? Is the fuel pressure correct and is the volume of fuel correct?
