How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

When extended or not properly secured, the telescoping poles may become separated when the locking mechanism is not fully engaged. This can cause the poles to come apart and fall down, and the saw blade and pruner head to drop, posing a laceration hazard or other serious injury.

Fortunately, you can sharpen the pruner blades fairly easily using only a 6-inch metal file or a sharpening rod that slowly files away the soft metal. The method you use depends on whether your tree pruners have a serrated saw blade or smooth blades that clamp closed.

Like an emery file, you can use sandpaper to sharpen your knife as well. Depending upon the grit of the sandpaper will help you determine how to sharpen the knife. Coarse grit sandpaper has lower numbers while finer grit sandpaper has higher numbers.
Option #4: Cut Aluminum Foil
This technique is similar to cutting sandpaper, only you use aluminum foil. Again, this will hone slightly dull scissors, but it won`t sharpen scissors with very dull or damaged blades.
Wood chipper blades can only be sharpened a limited amount of times before they need to be replaced. You should replace the older blades with good quality spares that are designed to be durable and maintain their edge for a long time.
Just changed your blade and still having issues? Double-check that you put the blade back into the rotary cutter correctly. If the bolt is too tight or the washer is put on backward, this can lead to problems. Also double-check that you cleaned out all of the fuzz and lint from the small spaces in the rotary cutter.
Wood chipper blades are essential for shredding wood, but they can become dull and need to be sharpened over time. Frequent sharpening of chipper blades is crucial for making sure they last longer, and the wood chipper can efficiently break down all kinds of plant debris.

I own a Troy-Bilt 425cs string trimmer with multiple add-on attachments. The unit works fine for string trimming, brush cutting, and cultivating. However, it will not properly power my edger attachment. It will turn the blade only about 60RPM at full throttle and will stop rotating when in contact with any grass. I have purchased 2 replacement attachments (different brands) figuring that was the problem. Both started out working fine, then “died” after about 15 minutes of use. I am stumped…is there any explanation for what is happening?
ANSWER : The power edger attatchment may have a slightly different coupling size on it than the other attatchments. Also, do a good inspection of the power head unit’s coupling at the EZ LINK connector. Maybe the head unit connector is getting hot over time, due to a lack of lube, and expanding internally, causing slippage in the connection to the edger attatchment. Inspect all that you can.

I would like to replace the mulching blades on my Sears Craftsman riding mower with regular cutting blades. I can find plenty of sources for new mulching blades, but not cutting blades. My mower is a model 917.259541 tractor and the blades currently on it are part #134149. I want to make sure I get the right size to replace them. Also, is there a source for a bagging system for this mower, that won’t cost as much as one from Sears?
ANSWER : The straight blade for the 42 inch mower is 138971.They cut better and are easier to sharpen and you will need them if you use a gass catcher. If you do not want to use sears for parts you may be able to find good deals on ebay.

Pull your spool off, and look next to the notches on the bottom of the spool. The decimal number is the size of line that you can use. Some spools will have more than one size listed; they can use either size.
