started it up and I heard a knocking sound I shut it off started it again and the same thing happened this time I let the mower run for about ten seconds and it started to lose power and stopped running. I researched some issues and pulled the flywheel and found the sheer key had been sheeted off. I replaced the key and fly wheel with the piston at top dead center and the magnet on the flywheel in front of the coil. Put it back together and still won’t start. The breather tube is making a sucking sound while the motor is turning over is that normal. What else could be the problem? Help please

There is the possibility that the valves need adjusting. As you probably know, if they are too far out of adjustment, starting will be difficult and there will be “runnability” issues. The Briggs OHV engines all have adjustable overhead valves. Just remove the little cover stamped OHV, careful with the thin gasket behind it and get a feeler gauge, possibly a Torx head driver and box wrench to do the job. Some of the set screws for the rocker arms have slotted heads maybe. The Briggs site has the instructions for this and ALL the specs on all their engines pertaining to valve clearance on intake and exhaust. Many of their OHV engines also incorporate a compression release feature which correct valve adjustment is critical for it’s correct operation. If you need more help or links to the Briggs help (under FAQ), then post back.
Most Briggs OHV engines are set at 1/4″ past TDC on the power stroke. Many adjust them at TDC (with both valves closed), but for the sake of the compression release (works off the cam), Briggs specifies 1/4″ below TDC on Power Stroke.

Other possible causes include: Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas.

A minimum 87 octane containing up to 10% ethanol is recommended. Do not use fuels with 15 to 85% ethanol, these fuels are not approved for use in small engines. Mixing oil with gasoline or modifying your 4-Cycle small engine to run on alternative fuels will damage the engine and will not be covered under warranty.

I have a Craftsman mower powered by a Briggs and Stratton 775 platinum professional series with OHV. My toro 6.5 hp push mower (2010), has no fire to the plug. I have not abused it. i have a small yard and it just gets normal use. Now it won’t fire. I first changed the fuel and cleaned the carb thinking it was that crappy ethanol again. but i grounded out the spark plug and cranked it…no spark. I think it has to do with the lever you pull back to start it . they have some stupid complicated safety contraption that rides along the fly wheel when you pull back on the handle for starting and shutting off the engine. …it looks worn out already…like a mini brake pad. any ideas?…do i really have to replace this garbage every year or am i on the wrong path here?
ANSWER : Unhook your wire from the coil that goes to shut off mechanism, and see if you have spark then. the wire may be grounded out, or your coil might have took a ****

I have a 12.5 Briggs & Stratton and I can not get the timing marks on the crankshaft and cam gear to line up when the piston is at top dead center.
ANSWER : Timing on briggs is piston past tdc by 6mm….also see if you are 360deg out?

My mower is about 2 months old. Haven’t had any issues until last night. I think I ran out of gas (maybe not, it was getting dark). I filled it up, and won’t stay running. Barely starts unless it is tilted way back (like handle on the ground all the way back), then it runs like a champ. If it is level, it will barely run until it dies. This is on concrete, and there is nothing underneath.
ANSWER : Hello,It sounds like there is sediment in the carb bowl. Remove the gas line from the carb and plug the line with a phillips head screwdriver. Remove the bolt in the bottom of the bowl and carefully tap on the bowl to loosen it without damaging the rubber gasket. Clean the bowl, and blow the ports in the bolt out. Raise and lower the float inside the bowl space to make sure that it is working freely. Re-assemble making sure to seat the rubber gasket properly. If there is sediment in the bowl, you might also consider an inexpensive in-line gas filter ($6 at Lowe’s, etc.).Best regards,–W/D–

I have a Poulan push mower that after mowing in a ditch started making a loud noise and running rough. It almost sounded as if metal was hitting metal. The mower was vibrating more than normal. I checked under the mower and nothing is hitting. After a few times of stopping the mower engine because it sound as if it is going to die down the mower will not start now. The shaft does not appear bent and the blade appears ok. The mower has oil, a good spark plug and a clean air filter. It was running fine until that moment. I did not see anything that I hit but it is possible I hit something in the ditch like a pine cone or branch. What could the problem be and how would I go about fixing it?
ANSWER : If you are sure the oil level is correct then it sounds like it’s about to die, unfortunately. A pine cone shouldn’t cause any damage, but a large branch may do so. Was it smoking before you shut it down? The vibration could be caused from a bent blade. It could also be caused from a part breaking in the motor. I wish I could have given you better news!

Good Luck,

Jim

ANSWER : Bad carburetor your old fuel jammed up the jet so it won’t get fuel and if it does it will start and shut off So replace the carb or try to clean the jet and run non oxy fuel only

My Z5426 won’t start. When I pull out the choke and turn the key, gas starts leaking out of the exhaust system just before it gets to the muffler. Last time it did start, it ran really rough. So, I turn off the engine and then tried to restart and that’s when I noticed the fuel leak.
ANSWER : Maybe bad fuel, fuel line leaking, flooding of the carburetor, since it did start and ran rough I am assuming that the gas was left set and more then likely this gummed up the carburetor, you will have to clean/rebuild it. If you have a can of carburetor clean you may be able to spray that into there and clean it up, I would not choke it to start it as it sounds like it got/is flooded/ing. Good Luck Tim
