ped turning with the lever in the upright position. I checked the belts, etc. underneath the tractor. No belts off the pulleys. No break in a belt. The belts stayed loose (unengaged) when the lever was up or down. The lever did not seem to be connected to the belt/ pulley parts under the mower.

Is there a metal-like pin that can break?

What is the standard free Sears warranty for lawn tractors? One year? Two years?

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

If the engine dies when the blades engage, it could be the result of a damaged safety switch. The first step in assessing the safety switch is to make sure it is plugged in securely. The switch is located underneath the seat, and you may have to remove the seat to reach it.
Belt-the number one cause for your blades not to engage is that your belt is either stretched or loose causing it to slip or fall off completely. Belt could have snapped also. When you are trying to process too much grass/leaves they could pack up under your deck and push off your belt.
A clogged carburetor is most commonly caused by leaving fuel in the lawn mower for a long period of time. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the carburetor and cause the engine to stall.
Whenever the blade is engaged, it rotates on a crankshaft to cut the grass. But if there is interference in this rotation, the engine can overload and shut off or lose power. Check the crankshaft connection to see if it rotates freely. Inspect the connecting hardware for damage or rust.
There is a safety switch at the end of the cutter engage lever which has gone faulty and needs replacing, overiding the switch by keeping it pressed in will allow the mower to be operational till replacement switch is fitted.
Replace the riding mower blade belt

The blade belt spins the blades to cut the grass. A worn or broken drive belt won`t spin the cutting blades so your mower won`t cut the grass. A worn blade belt can also cause mower deck vibration or uneven cuts. Examine the blade belt regularly and replace it if it`s worn or broken.

This is most likely a safety switch issue. Usually the seat safety switch will cause this problem. The mower dies because it thinks nobody is sitting in the seat, and shuts off for safety reasons.

I have a Craftsman lawn tractor, Model no. 289344 from Sears. I bought in on April 20 (in 2010,I think). While mowing, the blades suddenly stopped turning with the lever in the upright position. I checked the belts, etc. underneath the tractor. No belts off the pulleys. No break in a belt. The belts stayed loose (unengaged) when the lever was up or down. The lever did not seem to be connected to the belt/ pulley parts under the mower.

I would like to replace the mulching blades on my Sears Craftsman riding mower with regular cutting blades. I can find plenty of sources for new mulching blades, but not cutting blades. My mower is a model 917.259541 tractor and the blades currently on it are part #134149. I want to make sure I get the right size to replace them. Also, is there a source for a bagging system for this mower, that won’t cost as much as one from Sears?
ANSWER : The straight blade for the 42 inch mower is 138971.They cut better and are easier to sharpen and you will need them if you use a gass catcher. If you do not want to use sears for parts you may be able to find good deals on ebay.

I have a Crafstman Riding mower model #917.273643. That ran fine one second, I shut it off for five minutes. When I went to start it back up it wouldn’t start. Cranks fine, checked the wires, fuse, and spark plug. The plug was dirty so I cleaned it. But I am not getting any spark. I bought a new plug still no spark. I also checked the plug on another motor and I had spark so the plug wasn’t bad. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this or what may be wrong?
ANSWER : Sounds like your coil went bad

Belt change Say, do I have to drop the deck on a craftsman 1000 rider to change the belt that goes to the blades…….blades hardly turn unless I give them a shove by hand. Whats involved to drop the deck, I see some pins to pull underneath…thanks Bruce
ANSWER : I usually jack up the front of the tractor and drop the deck as far down as it will go and have at it. You only have to remove a few belt guards and a rod or two and route the belt around the pulleys.Remember the v part of the belt goes in the v pulleys and the flat part of your new belt goes on the flat pulleys. And be sure to look at the diagram on the deck or in your manual.Hope this will help you. donnyb60
