Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
The coil should be as close as possible to the flywheel without actually touching it. I usually insert a piece of greeting card stock between the coil and flywheel, then tighten the coil and remove the card stock. If you’re still using contact points, you may want to clean or replace them. Those are the single most common reason for lost spark in a briggs.

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

If you see a good spark at the coil, but not at the spark plug, then the problem may be caused by either a bad distributor cap, rotor, or carbon point and/or spring, or plug wires. Look down in the spark plug tube. If you see the spark going to the tube, the boot is bad.
If the ignition coil does not have spark, it`s time to check its wires. Use a test light to check the continuity on the signal wire and power wire on the ignition coil. If both wires are functional but the coil fails to produce spark, the ignition coil or the ignition control module is bad.
The electronic ignition pickup coil sits inside the distributor and triggers the ignition system to produce a spark. As such, if there`s an issue with the pickup, it can make starting your car difficult. The signal may cut out intermittently in an old or failing pickup, causing the engine to stall.
If no spark appears, check for broken wires, shorts, grounds or a defective stop switch. Once you have confirmed that the stop switch is working, reconnect the spark plug lead. If your ignition start or push button start needs replacing, consult a Briggs & Stratton dealer near you.
With a poor ground the starter ring return path may not allow adequate amps to return to allow a starter to reach the torque and speed to start. Normally, however, with a well tuned car and cranking, the engine will fire right up. Weakness, though, and it may not start.
The starter will not have any impact on the engine`s ability to produce spark. There are a number of issues that may cause an ignition system to not produce spark. A bad crankshaft position (CKP) sensor (on engines that do not have a distributor), or broken, loose or corroded wires from the sensor to the PCM.
A Bad Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor

If the crankshaft position sensor has failed completely, it will not send a signal to the (ECU) at all. Then, the computer won`t send any fuel to the injectors. This will leave you unable to start the car.

If no spark appears, check for broken wires, shorts, grounds or a defective stop switch. Once you have confirmed that the stop switch is working, reconnect the spark plug lead.
If a coil of wire is exposed to a magnetic field and the magnetic field then changes (or moves), it creates an electric current in the coil of wire. This process is known as `inductance`. This can be demonstrated simply by moving a permanent magnet across a coil.
What Causes an Outlet to Spark? A home`s electrical system is split into circuits, and a few circuits may have numerous outlets along the way. By this happening, there`s a split moment when the plug and outlet connections are nearly touching, and the electrical current can reach across that gap, creating a spark.
If this wire has no power, then your ignition coil is not receiving current. You should check the wiring from your ignition switch to the coil for breaks in the wire and repair them. If this wire has power, then the wiring from the ignition switch to the coil is working properly and you can move on.

I have mtd large wheel push mower tecumseh model 501039c engine has no spark to plug, coil checks good. i have disconnected the ground wire from the coil that leads to? and grounded the coil to another part of the mower and will get spark to the plug that way. I have not tried running the mower with the coil grounded where I have it. What can be the problem?
ANSWER : I would say if you can get a spark by moving the ground, try running the mower. If it works you should be OK.

What are the symptoms of a bad coil on my Poulan chainsaw? Mine only sparks at high RPM’s, as tested with my electic drill motor spinning the engine and grounding the removed spark plug to the engine head. I don’t want to buy a new coil if that may not be the problem. I’ve already checked the kill switch wiring and the high tension spark plug wire itself, as well as trying several different plugs.
Thanks! -Rob
ANSWER : There has to be a reasonable spark at hand cranking speed, with most electronic ignitions they work off speed of rotation so you do need to crank the engine at a fair speed, check the air gap between the flywheel magnet and the ignition core, this should be around 0.3mm, if there is not spark at all when cranked well it will be a replacement unit required.

My chainsaw has no spark, I have checked the spark plug and it works on another unit, i guess it may be the ignition, ho0wever as it is a small coil I have no way of checking. can the coil be simply tested, otherwise can one be purcahsed.
ANSWER : Yes the coil can be tested. you would need to know the proper specs but with a multimeter you should be able to get a resistance value from your plug wire to ground. With my experience 10000 – 30000 ohms should allow it to run. If this is no help one common thing is your kill switch. A wire should run from the coil to the switch, if this wire is shorted to ground it will not run.

I have a John Deere 317 tractor that does not start. The engine turns but does not fire. The plugs and points are good. I do not get a spark at the points or plug. What should I check next next.
ANSWER : We will be testing for voltage to the points, coil, engine to tractor wiring harness, ignition switch

Tools needed:
volt meter to read 12 volts, or test light

1) with the points open: is there voltage at the connection wire at the points
If yes; adjust points to .020″ and try to crank engine and check for spark
*** you may want to determine if condensor is connected to this wire also
if no
2) check point side (neg or – ) of coil for voltage
if yes, engine should start
if no
3) check for voltage at the + side of coil
If yes, coil is bad
if no
4) check wire connector from engine to frame wiring harness
if yes; engine should start

if no
5) check wiring on the back of ignition switch
if yes; engine should start

if no
6) check that ignition switch RED or BATTERY supply wire has voltage
if yes; switch is bad

if no
7) check supply wire and circuit breaker connected to the battery side of the solenoid
if yes; engine should start

if no; circuit breaker could be at fault or wire connector at battery supply

My snow blower engine does not have a spark. I changed the spark plug with no change. I took out the points and condeser assembly and determined with a electrical multitester that when the points were opened or closed the circuit was still flowing. When I disconnected 2 wires, one from the condenser the other to a black round plastic thing (which has the spark plug wire attached to it) the circuit is open when the points are open.
ANSWER : Sounds like a faulty ignition coil to me.
