How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Pest control, a process that maintains nuisance organisms below economic thresholds, is a complex ecological process often mediated by biodiversity. Agricultural intensification results in widespread losses of biodiversity, with important implications for pest control.
Common examples of physical pest control include removing or destroying nests, blocking holes, windows or doorways, temperature control methods to kill pests, or setting traps to catch pests and then remove them from the area.
a persistently annoying person. synonyms: blighter, cuss, gadfly, pesterer.
Because some insects threaten human health, destroy food, damage structures or landscapes, or cause general annoyance or anxiety, they are considered pests.
IDENTIFICATION. To the naked eye, spider mites look like tiny, moving dots; however, you can see them easily with a 10X hand lens. Adult females, the largest forms, are less than 1/20 inch long.
Most active in dry, hot conditions, spider mites use their needle-like mouthparts to feed on fluid extracted from individual plant cells. While they don`t bite humans or pets, their presence in your landscape sounds an alarm.
The short answer is yes; they are safe when professionally applied by a licensed local pest control company. After all, these products are designed to kill insects and rodents with minimizing risk and harm to human beings or animals.
Chemical Control. The most common method of pest control is the use of pesticides—chemicals that either kill pests or inhibit their development. Pesticides are often classified according to the pest they are intended to control.
Insecticides should be used indoors only as a last resort and as a complement to available nonchemical methods, such as sanitation, exclusion and mechanical disposal. The only insecticides residents should use indoors are ready–to–use sprays, dusts, or baits specifically marketed for in-home use.
Lemongrass, citrus, peppermint, eucalyptus, tea tree, citronella, catnip, and lavender oils all possess properties that repel bugs. The oils can be used individually or combined to make a simple anti-bug potion. Mix about 1 cup of water with 25-30 total drops of oil into a small spray bottle.
`Natural pest management` is a method of controlling pests without using chemicals. Instead, other insects, birds, animals, plants or mechanical techniques are used. Chemical pesticides have many disadvantages.
Exterminator. The main goal of an exterminator is to destroy pests.
noun. an annoying or troublesome person, animal, or thing; nuisance. an insect or other small animal that harms or destroys garden plants, trees, etc.
Exterminator. The main goal of an exterminator is to destroy pests.
Pests carry harmful diseases and bacteria that can expose your family and pets to illness. Eliminating these pests quickly can help minimize exposure and protect your family`s health and well-being in the long run.

Couple of guys tried to help me on this, perhaps you guys could come back. I forgot to mention there is a pressure tank bladder type on the discharge side. Could the air in this tank be messing with the prime. I checked the intake. It has water in it after bleeding air from the discharge system where before it was dry before purging air. I think there is air in the system and wonder if it is coming from the pressure tank?. i open up one of the discharge valves and a lot of air comes out. Should I put a valve on the pressure tank to take it off line until I get water from the well?

Mar 12, 2010 – Could it be the check valve? I took it off and the flap appears to be working correctly. This well has been here a long time. Never given me any problems. I do have galvenized couplers on the discharge and intake sides. Old. Could these be leaking even though they show no sign of water? The discharge is able to hold 30 pounds easily overnight. I do not hear any vacuum in the intake when I take it off. Could the pipe to the well have a leak? I know I would have to insert a sleeve but I do not want to go through the hassle if I do not have to. I had put on a brand new pump from the hardware store that did the same thing so I think that would elliminate the pump as being the problem.
I disconnected it for the winter and rehooked it up. The galvanized couplers on the discharge and pump side are old but do not appear to be leakeing as I taped them well. The check valve seems to be functioning well as I took it off and the flap works correctly. The well is not pulling water. there does not appear to be a vacuum on the check vale when I losen it. could the check valve be bad? I am aware I might have to resleeve the well, but do not want to hassle with this if I do not have to. I want to eliminate everything else first. i put another brand new pump on it to see if it was that. That partiuclar pump which was the same thng did not work either.
I took the pump nose off and looked at it. The one way valve appears to be working fine. The impeller is working fine also evidenced by when I turn it on witht the discharge cap off, water shoots out. When I open one of the discharge valves and turn it on, the pressure drops to 10lbs. At this point the prime water has moved through the pipe and and the pump does not soound like it has any water in it. I pull the cap off and have to “reprime it again.” It again goes back to the pressure gauage rapidly fluctuating while pump on. I disconnect pump on intake side I hear no vacuum. The guage is on the discharge side. The seals on the pump nose do not look frayed or damaged. The pump is not leaking water in any of the joints. The pipes on discharge and well side do not appear to be leaking.

ANSWER : My friend, please boil your question down. Your title has to do with riding mowers but the leaking, bladder, impeller, air bubbles, pressure tank, check valve comments seem to be migrating toward a pump of some kind – well? spa? pool? irrigation?

Briefly, any system that involves a water source, a water moving device, water storage device and ultimate useage is subject to leaks … into the system and out of the system. If this is a well and you have air in your system, your pump may be sucking air at the well or any loose connection between the tip of the pipe and the inlet to the pump. Your bladder could have failed but from what I can get from your comments, this is not the case. On the pressure side, neither air nor water will leak in … only out.

Please recheck all connections. Make sure your check valve is installed correctly and not leaking. The check valve assists the foot valve, which may have failed.

I am more inclined to think your well may be at the end of its useful life. To prove or disprove, you could have a plumber put a vacuum gage on your pump. He or she can answer this question is about 90 seconds based on this test. Expect to pay for one hour of time, which will be less than the time you have already invested in your project.

My petrol lwan mower won’t start! I have checked the spark plug and cleaned it, checked the air filter and have also cleaned it they are fine. I have also taken the carburettor to bits and have cleaned it and still no joy. It has a full tank of petrol and the oil is fresh also. I checked the air line and the petrol pipe and these are all ok. When i sprayed quick start into the air filter my lawn mower started up straight away. Then cut out once it had used it up. my throttle plate had also snapped which i fixed and my clutch cable had also come loose which i have tightened and is now fine. The lawn mower is only 3 years old and has not been used for 2 years as my neighbour just went out and brought a new one. so i am trying to get this one started as my electric one has just died on me. I have also been having a go at setting the carb today buy adjusting the air pin but still no joy. It is firing though but just wont start!!! can anyone else suggest anything that might be wrong. Also do these have chokes as i can not find one for it. MY LAWN MOWER IS A POWER DEVIL 3.5HP
ANSWER : When you sprayed the quick start into the thing and it started and ran out, I think the answer sits here you also said you pulled the carb apart to bits it is apparent to me you did not do a thorough job!! Just the fact that you stated that it has not been started for two years tells me that you are having petrol movement problems. For one thing to get started check all the little orifices associated with petrol movement this is surely where you will find your answer to get the machine running, I know this for a fact. You will receive joy just as soon as all your do diligence is finished. If you cannot find the choke on your machine you surely cannot buy one for it. Maybe this repair stuff is just not your thing, maybe as your neighbor before you, you should maybe go shopping and then you will achieve the full amount of joy you are in such desperate need for. Going from electric power to petrol power is a total different world. I think that now my answer to your question is almost as long as your question, so I will be stopping because my fingers are tired of all this typing, GO BLACK HAWKS! Good luck PAL

Wont run, not getting fuel. disconnected fuel filter, still nothing. Can spray a shot of carb cleaner directly into carb, and will run until it burns the fuel then dies. Check and getting good spark.
ANSWER : You say it’s not getting fuel? when you bypassed the filter was gas coming out of the fuel line right where it connects to the carb? If it runs on ether, carb cleaner or pouring fuel in the carb then your problem wont be the the carb or motor it will be something like a cracked, dryrotted or pinhole in the fuel line. Or something restricting the flow from the tank to the carb.

Low oil pressure while car is in idle..check gauge light comes on. I had the oil pump replaced and the sludge cleaned up. The check guage light still comes on when car is in idle and epecially when the car is hot.
ANSWER : Sounds like your oil pump replacement was left too late.sounds like a worn engine due to oil starvation with the previous low oil pressure and sludge problem.to verify the oil pressure you need to fit an oil pressure guage. to make sure it isnt just a faulty oil pressure switch. The specifications of the oil pressure for your vehicle will be in the haynes/bentley repair manual or find it online.Do you have the corect grade of oil in it?

Im lost and dont know what to do next. It is a second hand mower so I am not even sure if all of the parts are there and on right but everything seems to be correct. I have checked the parts list.
