Remove the guide bar and clean out the grooove and the oil delivery hole in the the side of it, clean away any dirt from the external oil chanel in the bar pad of the saw, drain the oil tank and fill with a suitable cleaning fluid, give it a good flushing out, this will help to remove any dirt that me be in the oil tank filter.

But how does a chainsaw oil pump work? The crankshaft drives the pump, which draws oil from the tank and pushes it onto the guide bar via the outlet hole. The movement of the chain then distributes the oil along the entire length of the guide bar.
The oil adjusting screw is just below the base of the chain and guide bar. Turn the screw counterclockwise toward the plus symbol, “+,” to increase the guide bar oil flow or clockwise to the minus symbol, “-,” to decrease the bar oil flow, says Garden Tools & Instruments.
If you run a chainsaw without bar oil, it`s likely that the chain will heat up and eventually break. This can cause extensive damage to the chainsaw and may even require a new chain and bar. It`s imperative that you use the correct amount of bar oil.
If the chainsaw won`t start, or starts and then stops and you find the spark plug wet with fuel mixture, it means that the engine is flooded (you will probably smell petrol). It happens when too much fuel enters the combustion chamber, possibly because you have pressed the primer many times.
When you want to turn the engine off, the ignition switch is set to off, or a kill switch is depressed. This creates a circuit from the ignition coil straight to engine ground. Now, the circuit is grounded, and the spark plug no longer fires. This will cause your chainsaw to shut off.
Naturally, the chain of your chainsaw will need to be oiled well to function perfectly. To make sure that it functions well, grab some WD-40 Multi-Use-Product. WD-40 works great for both – rust prevention and lubrication.
Adjustable Flow Chainsaw Oilers

Adjustable flow oilers still deliver oil to the bar and chain automatically without the need for a manual pump. The adjustable part comes from the fact that, before each use or between each cut (always with the saw shut off!), you can modify the amount of oil that will be released.

Bar-and-chain oil comes in two types: summer and winter. Egelhoff explains that summer and winter oils have different viscosity. Winter oil is thinner, allowing it to run smoothly even in cold temperatures and when stored for awhile. Summer oil is thicker, heavier and formulated to work in hot conditions.

The automatic chain oiler does not get oil to the chain. Yes, it has chain oil. The black tube to the top chamber at the bar, seems to be plugged and I cant get it off to clean it out. Thanks, Steve
ANSWER : I have never seen an automatic chain oiler that worked. Even new ones don’t seem to work. Just pour a little used engine oil on the bar once in awhile like everyone else does.In theory there is a small piston that rubs on an eccentric at the chain sprocket, and that sucks in oil and pushes it through a hole, into the center groove of the bar.But if the piston is dry, it won’t pump.If the holes are clogged with sawdust, it won’t work. Here is a video that may help:http://www.ehow.com/video_4756894_a-chain-saw-bar-oiler.html

Automatic oiler has never worked well even when saw was new, chain never gets enough oil. Should I use a lighter grade oil, or what else should I check?
ANSWER : Take the bar off the saw and check that the hole that the oil comes out hasn’t become blocked with saw dust. It sometimes happens also that when you are filling the saw with oil, shavings and saw dust can get into the tank and this can block the pipes connecting the tank to the hole that the oil comes out. Although it isn’t really recommended, I have used waste engine oil regularly for oiling the saw. This works ok as long as there aren’t any lumps in it.
