eep it running if I press the prime bulb a couple of times every 15 seconds.

Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
Try replacing the float and needle. The float (floats) and pulls the needle up to let gas through to the carb. It will stay running as long as you press the prime bulb because this sends gas straight to the carb without going through the gas bowl. It’s best to remove the carb and clean it then replace the float and needle

A Dirty Carburetor Can Cause a Lawnmower To Start Then Die

By far, the most common issue that causes a stalled motor is a dirty carburetor. The carburetor on your engine is the thing that draws in air and mixes it with the fuel. Contrary to what the movies might make you think, gasoline itself is not very flammable.

A clogged carburetor is most commonly caused by leaving fuel in the lawn mower for a long period of time. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the carburetor and cause the engine to stall.
If your lawn mower starts, runs briefly, then dies these are the four most common reasons that`s happening: Dirty carburetor / clogged carburetor bowl. Old gasoline that has gone bad. Dirty or defective spark plugs.
If your lawn mower starts, runs for a while, then dies, check the ignition coil, gas cap, and spark plug. One or more of these parts could be causing your problem. Follow our repair and symptom guide to help you fix this.
You Lose Power in the Middle of Mowing:

Here`s why this happens and what you can do: Dirty Air Filter on Your Lawn Mower: Clean or replace. Dirty Spark Plug: Clean or replace. Build Up of Clippings & Debris: Clean underside of your lawn mower deck as noted above.

The spark plugs are worn or damaged

If you find that your lawnmower keeps dying, or keeps stalling while cutting grass, then inspect the spark plugs. Look for signs of damage or wear. Something as simple as a cracked porcelain insulator can mean an electrode has been damaged or burned away.

You can expect to get anywhere from six to ten years out of your riding mower, or longer with proper care and maintenance.
Whenever the blade is engaged, it rotates on a crankshaft to cut the grass. But if there is interference in this rotation, the engine can overload and shut off or lose power. Check the crankshaft connection to see if it rotates freely. Inspect the connecting hardware for damage or rust.
A dirty carburetor is the most common cause of a lawn mower that starts and then dies. Other possible causes include: Stale/Dirty Gas. Faulty Choke.
Condensation inside the gas tank is one culprit, but moisture can also enter the system through a loose or ill fitting gas cap. The best solution is to drain the mower`s gas tank and refill it with fresh gasoline. A clogged fuel filter can also cause a mower engine to die.
Your lawn mower turning over but not starting due to several reasons, such as a faulty or disconnected plug, a disconnected spark plug wire, a clogged air filter, or a contaminated fuel tank. A faulty carburetor, a dirty cutting deck, or a dysfunctional flywheel brake can also cause this.
Use Carburetor Cleaner

Fortunately, you can generally do this without even taking the carburetor out of the engine. Start by purchasing some commercial lawnmower carburetor cleanerOpens a new window, which comes in a simple spray can and will make it easy to clean the inside and outside of the carb.

Maintenance lapses become evident when the mower turns over slowly or begins to falter at start-up. The fault could be a dirty spark plug, air filter or carburetor, or it could be related to the quality of the gasoline used. Slow starting can also be the result of a failure to clean the blades.

Oil is fine, runs fine for about 10 minutes then bogs down and dies. Let it sit for 10 minutes it will start again and run fine for another 10 minutes. Used to be 20 minutes, then 15. The cooler the weather the longer it runs. Is there some electrical component that may be getting weak? 17.5 hp Briggs. Air cooled. Air filters have been changed but didn’t help. Plug wire?About 5 yrs old. Help – It’s taking six hours to mow………..
ANSWER : It could easily be an electrical issue, or not. Get a spark tester (hooks up to the spark plug). Pep boys, Autozone, and Napa all sell them for less than $10. Check for spark when the mower has quit. If no spark, most likely need to replace the ignition module. Also check the flywheel key, if it is has been sheared or even knicked, the engine will run hot.If you still have spark when engine has failed, check the vent on the gas cap. A clogged vent will cause a vacuum to form in the tank and stall the engine.Good luck!

ANSWER : Was the tractor new when you baught it? if so you never know how long that battery sat before you bought it. not sure where you live but if it has been cold alot where you are there is another reason. Those little tractor batteries don’t have a whole lot of starting amps and if you start it while its cold and don’t let it run for an hour at least it cannot recharge. Tractor stalls i start mowing after 15 min. or so it stalls. Let cool down then its runs again for 15 and stalls.
ANSWER : I had a similar problem with my Craftsman 42″ lawn tractor with a Briggs and Stratton 17 HP engine. The problem turned out to be the solenoid valve on the bottom of the carburator. The valve shuts off the gas when you turn off the mower to stop backfire. After I replaced the valve, the mower is working like new.
