How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

The PondXpert Filtobox 3000 Bio is suitable for ponds up to 3,000 litres (660 gallons).
An easy way to work this out is to simply multiply your pond`s capacity in litres by 1.5. As per the example above – let`s say you have a 9000 litre pond: 150% of 9000 -> 9000 x 1.5 = 13,500. You will want a pond filter that is suitable for ponds up to 13,5000 litres.
The best way to clean your biofilter is to gently rinse the filter mat and Bioballs in pond water. Rinsing them this way will remove any gunk and large debris without killing too much of the ecosystem your pond spent all year creating.
Minimum Pump Size

Water needs to circulate through the filter at least once every 2 hours. This means that if you have a 1,000-gallon pond, you need a pump that can produce at least 500 gallons per hour or GPH. If you have fish, then it is best to double the pump`s capacity to ensure that your water stays clean.

How Many Fish? Stocking levels will vary depending on filtration and husbandry however a general rule for stocking is 25 cm of fish per square metre of surface area or 55cms per 1000 litres volume.
The recommended minimum filter surface area is 2.50 cubic feet per minute (cfm) per square inch of filter area. Example 1: 2000 cfm ÷ 250 inches = 800 square inches or 20″ X 40″ filter grill. The maximum allowable filter velocity is 300 feet per minute (fpm) on disposable filters.
Look at Your Existing Air Filter. If your HVAC system has an air filter, you can look for its size to ensure you can get the right replacement. Most filters have sizes listed on the side in print, including the length, width, and depth in inches. Usually, they`re listed in that order.
Smaller backyard koi ponds are at least 6 feet by 8 feet. This is usually a little over 1,000 gallons of water if the pond is 3 feet deep. Your pond can be smaller if you don`t want to put koi in it. The average size backyard koi pond is about 10 feet by 15 feet.
We recommend cleaning out the biofall (biological) pond filters 3 times a year. You can have it done during spring clean-out, the fall service process, and winter maintenance. You`ll have to clean them if they clog, which is rare. Clean out the skimmer filters that catch debris at least once per week.
Bio balls should be used for biological filtration only. You see, bio balls are designed to house bacteria, not to trap and remove waste from the water column. That is the job of mechanical filtration, such as sponge pads, foam blocks or filter floss.
Bio balls don`t need to be replaced as long as they are kept clean and show no signs of falling apart. Replacing bio balls will actually be detrimental to your system as they make up a good portion of your biological filter that allows your fish tank to sustain itself.
General rule of thumb that I`ve always worked with is about for every one thousand (1,000) litres of water, one Koi.
As a rule of thumb if you work on the basis of keeping 55cm of Koi per 1000 litres of pond water, and your filtration is of adequate size then this will be a good starting point.
Standard air filter sizes include:

10X20. 14 X 20. 16X24. 20X20. 12X12.

I suggest going with a larger Cartridge Filter on your pool to save time in between cleaning and to provide the best water quality. So for a 15,000-gallon pool, I suggest a 300 sq ft filter, for a 20,000-gallon pool a 400 sq ft filter and for a 30,000-gallon pool a 500 sq ft filter.
Filter Size

With pool filters, it`s best to err on the larger size so it can handle the power of your pump. A helpful rule of thumb is to choose a filter with at least 1 square foot per 10,000 gallons pool capacity.

Bigger is always better in pond filtration. You can`t have too big a filter for your pond, larger filters have more surface area and they don`t have to be cleaned as often (which means less work for you).

My pool pump makes a buzzing noise but there is no water circulating into the pool and no suction what-soever. What could be the problem?
ANSWER : First, Check your voltage at the terminal with a voltmeter. If it is within 10% of what is stated on the name plate, try the following suggestions. If is is more than 10% off, call an electrician. Common problems that cause this humming with no suction in these pool pumps are:-Take the pump apart and look for rubbing that could be causing your pump to tighten up. -Check for a seized motor. If the motor has seized up, you will have to have it repaired or replaced.-It could be a winding switch or capacitor problem. Again, a pro will have to service it.

The pump will not continue to run after starting, it runs for 5 seconds and then stops, until the next attempt to detect water, the pump is sitting in three feet of water. The pump will not continue to run after detecting water.
