How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?
We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :
“Front-tine tillers are best for performing general garden maintenance, such as weeding, soil preparation, and composting in small or medium gardens,” McCoy says. “Alternatively, rear-tine tillers, which have engine-driven wheels, are best for larger planting areas.”
The most important factors to look for when choosing or renting a tiller are the engine type, power, tine position and build quality. Gas, electric and cordless battery powered tillers each have their own advantages to consider when buying a garden tiller, as do the differences between front and rear tine tillers.
A rototiller, or tiller, is the heavier and more powerful of the two. Tillers are made for digging deeply and aggressively to break open the soil—for instance, when you`re creating a brand-new garden bed or to getting started at the beginning of the season.
For small gardens less than 1,500 square feet, you can get away with a mini-tiller, sometimes called a cultivator. For a medium-size garden, you probably need a mid-size tiller with a 5-horsepower engine. For gardens larger than 5,000 square feet, you`ll want a heavy-duty tiller with at least a 6-horsepower engine.
For most jobs, a tiller depth between four and six inches will prove ideal, as you won`t encounter tree roots or rocks which can damage your rototiller. Once you have prepared the correct settings, it`s time to till the area. If the soil is compact and hard, start tilling with the shallowest setting.
There are three main varieties of tillers: Front tine, Rear tine, and mini-cultivators. The tines are the metal blades that perform the digging. Both front and rear tine tillers have depth stakes to adjust the level of soil you want to work.
Most rototillers have a tilling depth of 6 to 8 inches, but some have a depth of up to 12 inches or more. If you have a tough patch of soil to break up, be sure to choose a rototiller with a deep tilling depth.
Hand tillers are wonderful tools for preparing your garden`s soil in the springtime. They also work well to maintain your garden throughout the growing season by removing weeds and aerating the soil.
It`s not a good idea to use a tiller immediately before planting. This is because tilling introduces many air pockets into the soil which can result in less than ideal seed germination.
For a tiller with a bladed wheel, push the tiller forward while it`s in the ground. This will rotate the blades and till the soil. For a tiller without the wheel, twist the tiller as you pull it straight out of the ground.
A powered tiller or cultivator will make removing grass or sod easier. While purchasing power equipment will add to your total cost, choosing the right tool may save you time and labor.

How do i replace the lift shaft assembly on my craftsman lawn tractor? model number 917.272442.
There is not enough space here to describe the replacement procedure. some helpful tips though – order the part you are replacing [ordering from sears tell them: division 71, source 917, part no. 159471] before you tear into it. sitting around for 3 or 4 weeks, you’ll probably forget where things attach. also, find the exploded parts diagram in your owner’s manual and look it over carefully to see what you’re getting yourself into. sometimes, it’s worth a few bucks to let a competent shop do the work
I KNOW THE SERIAL # BUT THE MODEL # IS WON OFF. HOW CAN I USE MY SERIAL # TO FIND THE MODEL #?

Drive belt 42″ craftsman tractor model #917.270810
You need to post the 917.xxxxxx model number for some one to help you. There are about 10 different belts that fit different 42″ Craftsman mowers.
You could also go to www3,sears.com and put in the same 917.xxxxxx model number and look up the part number. You do not want to buy a belt just by the size alone but must use one that is made for the machine application. The cheaper ones that you pick up in the local hardware store etc. like a 3Lxxx or 4Lxxx are made for low horsepower electric motors and will not last on your lawnmower.
