Model & Serial Number Location
The model and serial number of a Murray riding mower is located under the seat or on the back of the mower.
The year the mower was manufactured is represented as the first digit, and the day of the year it was produced is represented by the last three digits. For example, if the date code is “4156,” the mower was produced in 2004, on the 156th day of the year. The date code could also indicate 1994.

To determine the year of manufacture for a tractor with a six digit number use the following formula. Take the first and the fourth digit, and subtract three to get the year. For example, the serial number of 395602 would be: 36-3 = 1933.
Every lawnmower, engine and appliance has a specific model number and serial number. This is like the VIN on your car. It is the secret number to discover all the parts and accessories that are unique to your product.
Engines used in lawn mower applications usually have the model numbers stamped directly into the blower housing, muffler heat shield, or a few inches above the spark plug, as well as the fuel tank and the base of the engine block. Depending on the style of engine shroud used, the engine code numbers may be covered.
