Put your left hand on the front handle and your right foot in the rear handle to secure the chainsaw. Pull the starter rope quickly and smoothly until you hear the engine fire. Disengage the choke (if engaged) and pull the starter rope again to start the engine.
Pulling the choke lever provides proper fuel-starting mixture when the engine is cold. When attempting to start a cold engine, pull the choke lever outward to close. Slowly return the choke to the open position as the engine warms. Leave the choke in the OFF/OPEN position when starting or restarting a warm engine.
Some chainsaw models use a horizontal squiggle between two clear vertical lines to denote the choke position. Here`s how this process works: Turn the on/off switch to the “on” position and open the choke. This regulates the air-fuel mix to the engine.
STIHL recommends that you do not run your engine at wide open throttle without a load. A blower is under a load at all times, a trimmer is under a load as long as the trimmer head is in place and the line is to the correct length, while a chainsaw is under a load when the bar and chain are in a cut.
If the carburetor is clogged, it may only work with the choke engaged, which is not a good way to be running your engine. Cleaning the carburetor and replacing some of the internal parts with a new carb kit is a great way to get your carburetor running properly again.
Turn on the ignition of your car. Once the engine is warm, you can remove the air filter and check whether the choke is open or closed. At this point, the choke should be open to allow the engine to breathe fully.
With the choke on, the fuel blasts its way in and provides the carburetor with the fuel it needs. While this is relatively safe and doesn`t harm any of the internal parts of the bike, it does lead to higher consumption of fuel.

Choke on means that the choke plate is covering the carb throat. The “choke” is off when the choke lever is down or when the choke lever is facing you if your choke is a handle bar mount. Choke off means that the choke plate is not covering the carb throat.
