The Hydro-Gear® transaxles on an Ariens® zero turn lawn mower are not directly driven by the lawn mower engine itself, but by a belt. The transaxle drive belt is routed through an engine pulley, idler pulleys and the pulleys on the top of the transaxles.
Hydro belts, transaxle drive belts, hydrostatic drive belts and ground drive belts. Different terminology, same thing. Whatever you call it, its function is to transfer power from the engine to the transaxles, powering the drive wheels on a zero turn lawn mower.
The “Deck Belt” goes around the pulleys right above the blades on the deck and then to a double pulley. The “Drive Belt” on your mower goes from the transmission, around an Idler pulley then over to the double pulley I mentioned before. The Drive belt also plays a role in making the wheels turn.
While the water pump is designed as a cooling system component in charge of preventing the engine from overheating, it is driven by the timing belt and it derives its power from the crankshaft of the engine.
Hydraulic MOTORS usually receive this pressurized fluid and turn a wheel, blade or some other device. The term HYDROSTATIC usually applies to pumps and not to motors. Hydrostatic pumps are typically variable volume as opposed to fixed displacement volume.
Burned or Glazed Side Wall: As the mower belt continues to get used, the belt will wear down. As a mower belt wears down, the side wall of the belt will begin to look burned or glazed. This is another sign that your belt is worn and needs to be replaced.
Thus, a closed loop (hydrostatic) system offers a way to finely control the speed and direction of a motor. Unlike an open loop hydraulic system, fluid does not flow to a reservoir, but flows directly back to the pump (which is why the term “closed loop” is used to describe this type of circuit).
These control rods are adjustable. By rotating the threaded linkage connector ferrules, the length and the resulting range of movement at the regulator valve can be altered.
Where can I find a belt routing diagram for my engine? A: Commonly a belt routing diagram sticker is on the underside of the hood or in the engine compartment. If there is no diagram, make a sketch of the belt and pulleys before removing the belt. This will help you re-route the new belt correctly.
The ground drive belt connects the engine crankshaft to the transaxle pulley to drive the rear wheels. If the belt breaks, the lawn tractor won`t move. If the belt is worn, the lawn tractor moves sluggishly because the belt slips on the pulley.

I replaced the rear drive belt and now I only can go forward, what did I do wrong or what can I do to check this?
ANSWER : Your belt is not on right. MTDs use a tension system for the drive belts to control speed. You either missed a pulley or got one backwards.Check here for diagrams. You will need the model # for your tractor but is a good site for all kinds of mowers

Drive belt Have replace drive belt but mower still has no forward movement. Mower is only 2 years old but its already had to have another drive belt installed by the dealer last year. wanted to do it myself but when i install belt theres hardly any tension so mower doesnt move. Checked and rechecked the diagram and is installed correctly. Cant find a tensioner adjustment if it has one.
