How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Take a look at the blade under the mower deck. Sometimes the knocking sound you hear could be the result of a loose, bent or wobbling blade. If you`ve recently removed or replaced the blade and it suddenly started knocking, this is quite possibly the cause of your issue.
Oil provides lubrication to the internal components of the lawn mower`s engine. A lawn mower can run without oil, but this will damage the metal parts of the engine beyond repair. Some lawn mowers have a low oil level indicator, which will prevent the mower from starting.
A clogged carburetor is most commonly caused by leaving fuel in the lawn mower for a long period of time. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the carburetor and cause the engine to stall.
Engine knocking may be caused by worn-out engine bearings. If the bearings are worn, they will not be able to support the weight of the engine, which can cause it to knock. Replacing the bearings may fix the issue.
Knocking occurs when fuel burns unevenly in your engine. When everything is going as it should, and the cylinders have the correct mix of air and fuel, the mixture burns in a controlled, progressive manner. After each cylinder`s air/fuel mixture burns, it should create a small “shock wave” in your engine.
The presence of oil and its distribution is absolutely crucial to an engines continued operation. Engines can work without oil, but the effect is so damaging they are only capable of running for less than 30 minutes until failing – and in most cases, it`s a lot quicker than that.
Overfilling a lawn mower oil tank will negatively affect engine performance and possibly prevent the mower from starting. Too much oil in a lawn mower can easily clog the air filter, foul spark plugs, and potentially cause a hydro-lock, which could bend the connection rods in a multi-cylinder mower.
Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas. If this doesn`t work, you might need a new fuel filter.
With proper maintenance, you can expect your Husqvarna riding mower to last up to 10 years or more. How long it will last depends on the model and how well you take care of it. Generally speaking, a Husqvarna riding lawn mower should last for at least 5-7 years with basic maintenance.
The easiest way to tell if your engine is flooded with gas is to remove the spark plug. If it`s wet, it`s flooded and you`ll need to let the cylinder dry out before trying to restart. Compressed air can help speed up the process.
Engine rod bearing and main bearing failure usually occurs due to a lack of lubrication (caused by a low oil level or infrequent vehicle maintenance). When the bearings fail, they create an excessive amount of clearance between the internal engine components, leading to a knocking noise.
If you start to notice rod knock, this isn`t a problem that will just resolve itself—you must take immediate action and replace the rod bearing while also fixing any other parts associated with the sound. If you do not take action quickly enough, you might need to replace the engine entirely.
Knocking occurs when fuel burns unevenly in your engine`s cylinders. When cylinders have the correct balance of air and fuel, fuel will burn in small, regulated pockets instead of all at once.
Once an engine starts to knock, the rod can fracture without warning. It could be the next time you start it in your driveway, or it could keep going for six months. Eventually though, the engine will blow and you`ll be stranded somewhere.
The excess oil can create air pockets in the oil, causing it to foam and reducing its effectiveness in lubricating engine components. This results in unusual engine noises, including knocking, tapping, or ticking sounds.
Seized car engine symptoms:

Fumes/smoke: since the engine can`t turn over, fumes, smoke, and even fire can happen – all of which are a sure sign of an engine seizure. Nothing: the most tell-tale sign of a seized engine is when nothing happens. When your car won`t start no matter how hard you try.

Loud popping, knocking, and stuttering noises from the hood of your vehicle are cause for concern, and could be a sign of major engine damage.
Should your vehicle`s engine run low on engine oil it could cause it to make a loud “ticking or tapping” noise. This noise is caused by an insufficient amount oil being pumped into the top part of the engine. A simple check of the engine oil level will help you determine if the system is low.
Wait one to two minutes for the oil to settle into the engine of your walk-behind mower and then follow the instructions in the manual for checking the oil level. After you`re finished, replace the dipstick.
If your lawn mower won`t start, you can easily troubleshoot common problems. Faulty, dirty, or disconnected spark problems have an easy solution. You may need to change the air filter, fuel filter, or oil.

Dont know what type of oil to use – Toro Power Lawn Mower
ANSWER : Put straight 30 weight motor oil in it. Not 10W30 or any multi-viscosity oil. Straight 30 weight motor oil. If you’re doing a complete oil change, then you may want to use Synthetic 30 weight, which will last longer between oil changes and also make your engine last longer (but it costs more too). Best of luck to you.James

Starting will not start
ANSWER : Pull the air cleaner and check for obstructions, dirt, oil etc. Leave off and try to start. Check plug for oil or wetness from fuel. Have a spare handy to check for spark. A shot of instant start into the air cleaner housing might help if the mower has bad or old fuel. You should drain the fuel out if it over a month old and unpreserved. Also, if the mower has been sitting with fuel in it the main jet sometimes gets clogged up due to todays alcohol enhanced fuels. You should get some help with removing the main jet and cleaning it out.
