Move the throttle lever so it engages the choke. Depending on the mower, this is done by positioning the lever between the fast and slow settings or pulling it upwards past fast to a point sometimes indicated by a circle with a diagonal line through it. Insert the key in the ignition.
If it has an automatic choke, you depress the accelerator all the way to the floor and then release it. You then turn the key to start the car. Once the car is started and the engine starts running smoothly, you can use the accelerator to release the choke and drive the car.
Automatically – An automatic choke uses a metal spring to open and close the choke plate. The spring is wound in a housing and attached to the choke linkage on one end. As the engine warms up, it warms the metal spring. As the spring warms, it expands, rotates, and opens the choke plate.
In practice, an automatic choke has several disadvantages. First, the driver has no control over it, unlike a manual choke. Second, it often goes wrong. It may fail to operate at all, making the car difficult or impossible to start.
The choke, a butterfly valve, reduces the intake of air and allows a fuel-rich charge to be drawn into the cylinders when a cold engine is started. As the engine warms up, the choke is gradually opened either by hand or automatically by heat- and engine-speed-responsive…
A cold engine won`t vaporise the fuel as well as it would in warmer conditions, so the choke helps enrich the mixture (either by adding in more fuel or cutting out airflow) to increase the amount of combustible vapour available to start the engine.
If the choke does not close, then either the linkage is gummed up, the air horn is warped, or the spring tension is too loose or the choke spring has experienced a failure such as an internal break.
Cold starts good, hot starts fair, POSSIBLE sputtering and poor performance, darker (blackish not bluish ) exhaust, increased fuel consumption (lower MPG). Your car would run rich, loose power, become thirsty and show black smoke on acceleration. hope this helps. Why was a choke needed in older cars?
If your bike is only running with the choke on, it`s probably because it`s running too lean. This can be caused by a few different things: All internal combustion engines need three things to run: fuel, air, and spark. If any of these are missing or not working properly, the engine won`t run.

My husqvarna zero turn mower has an auto safety shut off. I have isolated 3 (Brake, Left control level, and Right contol lever)trying to see which one was faulty, but I’m not sure where to go next. When I took the brake off, the mower stalled so I held the safety button down and when the brake was off the engine stayed running. But when I pulled the Left or Right Control level to move, it shut off, so I held those down to see if I could see which one was faulty. The engine stayed running, so I couldn’t figure out which one was bad. Every thing stayed running until I engaged the mower deck, and then it shut down again. I gave up at that point and figured I needed an experts help! Thanks, Jon Sable
ANSWER : There should be a switch under the seat. The system is designed to stop all functions if no one is setting in the seat. I believe the seat switch has failed.
Check it out and let me know.

Starting will not start
ANSWER : Pull the air cleaner and check for obstructions, dirt, oil etc. Leave off and try to start. Check plug for oil or wetness from fuel. Have a spare handy to check for spark. A shot of instant start into the air cleaner housing might help if the mower has bad or old fuel. You should drain the fuel out if it over a month old and unpreserved. Also, if the mower has been sitting with fuel in it the main jet sometimes gets clogged up due to todays alcohol enhanced fuels. You should get some help with removing the main jet and cleaning it out.

I have trouble starting a toro walk behind mower
ANSWER : All, I thought my carb was shot, so I replaced it. Still, start but no run (and had to use starting fluid). THEN!!! I noticed the spring to the “rev limiter” (just below and towards rear of carb) was not “tight”. The stupid bracket that holds the end of that spring had been bent down ~1/16″ and that caused all this heartache. CHECK YOUR REV LIMITER!!!
