How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Power Transfer

In the lawnmower application, the drive belt transfers the radial torque of the engine shaft to the input shaft of the transmission, which then is powered to turn and perform the function of the lawnmower: propelling the mower forward and spinning the blade.

A: Your mower has two belts. Both play a role in making the blades turn. The “Deck Belt” goes around the pulleys right above the blades on the deck and then to a double pulley. The “Drive Belt” on your mower goes from the transmission, around an Idler pulley then over to the double pulley I mentioned before.
The smooth side of the belt goes on smooth pulleys (as shown on the idler pulley pictured above), while the ribbed side wraps around the grooved pulleys.
Home and Garden Geek adds that you should be able to loop one or two fingers over the same belt when the tractor is off and the belt is “engaged” and pull it gently away from the pullies. This translates to one or two pounds of force. If you need more than two fingers, your deck belt may be too tight.
The loads driven by belts can be jerky, shock-prone or reversible.
What causes serpentine belts to break? Too much wear due to heat and friction will cause a serpentine belt to break over time. That`s why regular inspections are vital to making sure this doesn`t happen.
Belt Drive Pumps

A “Belt Drive” pump has a pulley mounted to its solid shaft and is driven by one or more belts that are attached to a pulley on the motor or engine. The pulley system allows these pumps to turn at a much lower RPM than a direct drive pump (typically 900-1400 RPM).
