How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

A tensioner bearing consists of a base, tensioner arm, spring, and pulley. It provides pressure to a timing belt that drives other pulleys while easing the strain on that belt.
Belt “Squealing” or “Whining” Noises

A common warning sign of an issue with your timing belt pulley is a high pitched squealing sound coming from the belt. Think of this sound as an alarm bell signaling a need for repair or replacement.

If your timing belt is in need of replacement, you can expect that service to cost anywhere from $300 up to $500. Because the timing belt is not easily reachable on many vehicles there is a good bit of disassembly and reassembly needed to get to the belt. Economy cars with smaller engines require less labor.
Of these, in the timing belt mechanism, the type with a slotted hole in the inner ring or a bracket for tension adjustment is sometimes called the “tensioner bearing,” and the type without an adjustment mechanism is sometimes called the “idler bearing.”
Tensioners, idlers and dampers work together to synchronise the timing belt`s rotations in your engine. While tensioners prevent slackness in the timing belt, idlers route the timing belt around ancillary features, and dampers work with the idlers to prevent the timing belt from coming loose.
The tensioner that keeps the belt taut is pressurized by the engine oil. If the tensioner has no oil pressure, the belt will become loose and possibly disengage from the pulleys and/or break. If the camshafts don`t have enough oil pressure to operate properly, they will also lock up, causing the timing belt to break.
Cambelts or timing belts usually need to be replaced, usually between 40,000 and 100,000 miles. Alternatively, for lower mileage cars, the belt is advised to be replaced around four or five years. However, it all depends on the car and manufacturer.
When your car`s timing belt is broken or irreplaceable, your engine will not be able to ignite or turn over properly. This means when you turn the key, you may hear the starter motor engage, but since the timing belt is responsible for operating the crank and shaft, it will not fully ignite.

My mower blades disengage when operating.
ANSWER : Not sure of your question, but if you mean, they start when you flip the switch and then disengage but the switch stays up.. you need to check two things. (1) The out put of your alternator, read the battery with a volt meter before you start it, then start up the engine and read the voltage again should be a higher reading with the engine running. 12.4 vdc with the engine off – 13.7 vdc with it running. (just an example). Next will be your seat switch. There is a switch under the seat if you are not sitting in the seat the blades should turn off. so the switch could be out of its socket, or broken.

Adjust the blade belt – Craftsman 42 in. Deck 19.5hp Lawn Tractor
ANSWER : Hi Terry:
As good luck would have it, I have one of these mowers.
As I see it, there are only two adjustments possible:
1) the for/aft positioning of the mower deck as determined by the length of the central front deck positioning rod.
2) the amount of tension on the spring that holds the engage idler against the belt. That can be changed by moving the bracket that anchors the spring.
I’ve had my unit for several years now and replaced blades, spindles, and pulleys (I mow far too many rocks) but never had to adjust the blade drive belt.
Hope this helps
