The valve movement is controlled by the rocker arm and the gap between the rocker arm and the valve tappet (top of the valve) is called the `valve lash`. When measured on a cold engine using a feeler gauge, valve lash for the Briggs LO206 engine should be . 003-. 004 inches on both the intake and exhaust exhaust side.
Adjusting the valves means setting the appropriate clearance between the base circle of the camshaft, otherwise known as the camshaft heel, and the tip of the valve or rocker arm, depending on the valve train setup.
Adjust an incorrect clearance with the rocker adjuster screw. If the rockers pivot on a shaft, the screw is usually at the pushrod end. There may be a slot-headed screw with a locknut. Use a ring spanner to loosen the locknut and turn the screw clockwise to decrease the gap, and the opposite way to increase it.
If your engine generates a loud clatter, it could be time for a valve clearance adjustment, though a tapping noise could also be caused by a loose rocker arm or some other component; the mechanic won`t know for sure without inspecting the valves.
Valve-related failures are often due to factors such as detonation, poor quality or defective parts, over-revving the engine, or not setting or maintaining proper valve lash. These can contribute to or even cause valve failures, but so can sloppy machining tolerances.
Valve Clearance Tips
Recommended valve-to-piston clearance is generally 0.080-inch minimum on the intake side and 0.100-inch minimum for the exhaust valve. The exhaust needs a little more clearance because it expands more with heat.
Check the clearance between the top rocker arm and the corresponding valve stem, located in the center of the valve spring, using a feeler gauge. If the clearance reading falls outside of the acceptable range of . 005- and . 007-inch, the top exhaust valve is out of adjustment.
Use a ring spanner to loosen the locknut and turn the screw clockwise to decrease the gap, and the opposite way to increase it. When the clearance is correct, hold the screw with a screwdriver while you tighten the locknut, then re-check the clearance. There may be a self-locking adjusting screw with no locknut.
