The pinion meets the flywheel and the starter motor turns. This spins the engine over, sucking in air (as well as fuel). As the engine turns over, the starter motor disengages, and the electromagnet stops.
Where Is the Starter Located in a Car? The starter is found on the driver`s side of the engine. It`s typically placed just beneath the left bank of cylinders.
Due to the complexity of starter motors, the average amount of time it takes to completely replace a starter is generally between 2 and 4 hours. If your car has an easily accessible starter and you take it to a mechanic worth their salt, your time should hopefully be closer to 2 hours rather than 4.
Always disconnect the battery before removing the starter motor, which is often awkwardly placed low down on the engine . You may have to raise the car on axle stands and work from below. Disconnect the battery (earth terminal first) to avoid an accidental short circuit.
Exactly how long it takes to replace a starter will depend on where it is in your engine, but it will generally take around 2 to 4 hours. Some starters are more accessible in some engines than in others. A mechanic may have to dig around and remove certain parts to get to that starter.
As a matter of principle, a “function test” using hammer blows or similar on the starter housing or the solenoid switch should not be performed for these starter types. Letting them drop onto the floor can also cause damage.
