You should prune lilac bushes between April and June but only once it has finished flowering. This might seem unusual, however, lilac plants flower on last year`s growth so by pruning earlier rather than later, you will not affect the following years flowers. Best Fertilizer For Lilacs
Fertilizing lilacs with a high phosphorus formula in early spring promotes blooming. Grass clippings and coffee grounds can be used as a good source of nitrogen. Use sparingly, as too much nitrogen in the soil will result in poor blooms.
Deadheading. It`s wise to deadhead your lilac once it`s finished blooming for the season. With a clean, good quality pair of pruners, cut the spent blooms off.
If your lilac grows taller than desired, right after the blooms fade cut back a few of the tallest stems to vigorous side branches a third or more of the way down the branch.
You can install barriers that go down 6 inches or more into the ground that should keep the lilacs from spreading through to your landscape beds. The barrier could be a poly-based material with steel or metal edging. There are many products on the market.
There are many types of lilacs. Most should reach full maturity at about 2-3 years old.
Trimming lilacs is best accomplished using clippers. Remove spent blooms all the way to the stems to prevent seeding and encourage more blooms later on. Cut back about a third of the branches. Cut away shoots growing near the ground that may be sprouting from the main trunk.
