For most effective results, a lawn mower deck should have a pitch, or height difference of 1/8-inch to 1/2-inch between the front of the deck to the back of the deck. Naturally, this makes the sweet spot about 1/4-inch of pitch, depending on the mower model.

Mower deck gauge wheels should be properly adjusted to prevent scalping grass on uneven terrain. The bottom of the wheels should sit approximately 1/8-1/2 of an inch from the ground, depending on your cutting height.
The first step to a beautiful lawn is a level mower deck. Level your mower deck once or twice a season.
For the last cut of fall, lower your mower blade one notch or set your mower deck to the lowest mowing height recommended for your turf. If possible, use a mulching mower and leave grass clippings on the lawn, as they can provide additional nutrients for the roots to store for use over the winter and early spring.
Turn the adjusting lock nut clockwise to raise the mower and counterclockwise to lower it. Measure from the blade to the ground again on both sides and adjust until the difference between the blade tip heights are within ⅛ -inch. Rotate the blades so that their direction is now front to back.
What is the correct way to lay decking? Any decking board manufacturer or professional will tell you: “The proper way to install a decking board is ridge side down.” The ridges are designed to allow for airflow, to stop moisture sitting in the ridge, and allow for a stronger structure.
Should the front of the mower run lower than the rear? Yes. The grass is cut on the front side of the mower and not at the rear. This leaves a better and more consistent cut and aides in better material distribution.
What appears to be a mower deck that`s out of whack may really be due to poor tire inflation. Front tires that are too low or rear tires that are overinflated can cause the appearance of a poorly adjusted mower deck. Always check and fill tires with the mower turned off and parked on a flat, level surface.

It appears that the deck is now uneven. I attempted to follow the directions for a side-to-side leveling. Started with trying to measure the blade height and am struggling with getting to a spot where I can measure the blade on the left side. By looking at the deck, it appears to be uneven. I am struggling with being able to raise the left side of the deck.
ANSWER : I’ve only had luck removeing the deck, turn it upside down. Measure blade, mark, remove blade, insert large pipe over spindle, bend in direction. Re-install blade, and do it all over and over till straight. Measure in several locations.

I have a 20 HP Sears riding mower with 42″ deck. Something has caused the right side of the deck to sit lower. It literally sits on the ground when lower to #1 position.

There will be one on each side, with the mower off, lower the deck to the lowest position, loosen the wing nuts on each side, then re-tightnen. There is also a possibility if this is not the way your deck is levelled, there will be a deck hang wire/rod, however those are usually found on zero turn style mowers.
