How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

While riding mowers operate at somewhat higher speeds of 3,200 RPM to 3,600 RPM, push mowers typically remain at or around 3,000 RPM. The majority of four-stroke lawnmowers run in the 2,800 RPM to 3,600 RPM range.
A full gas tank and oil reservoir are the essential first steps when checking why the lawn mower won`t stay running, but the problem could also be a dirty filter, clogged carburetor, improper fuel mixture, or a dirty spark plug.
Simply change the filter to give your mower more thrust. Finding the air filter should be easy as it is located on the left side of the mower`s engine. You can have it cleaned or you can opt to buy a new one. Treat your lawn mower`s engine the same way you treat you car`s engine.
How Self-Propelled Mowers Work. Self-propelled mowers are available in single and variable speed models. They work by engaging a speed control lever (sometimes part of the handle; sometimes a separate bar or shifter) that causes the mower to move forward.
A slow-moving Honda mower is commonly caused by a slack drive cable. Adjusting the tension will fix it. Other possible causes include: Drive belt loose.
The acceptable operating speed range is 1800 to 3600 RPM. Idle speed is 1750 RPM.
The most common reason for a surging lawn mower engine is a blockage in the fuel supply, but there are other possibilities: Bad gas. Bad spark plug. Dirty/faulty carburetor.
Many small “stationary” engines are rated to run at 3600 RPM because that is the standard speed for this type of engine. A stationary internal combustion engine used in a generator or pump normally spends its life running at a fixed speed.
The idle speed should feel consistent without skipping or slipping. In most of today`s cars, an idle speed of 600 to 1000 RPMs is average. If your car is idling rough, though, it won`t feel smooth. The RPMs will jump up and down, for example, or they`ll fall below 600 RPM (or whatever is typical for your vehicle).

Improving your exhaust headers and using wider valves can help you with ventilating the cylinder more completely, allowing more air and fuel to come in during the next cycle. This improves the performance and torque of the vehicle. Torque is all about air intake and fuel combustion inside the cylinders of the engine.
The highest setting on your mower! The top setting for most mowers gives a cutting height between 3.25 and 4 inches. This is best for your lawn, but at a setting of 4 inches you may sometimes see some “laying-over” of turf blades that some people find undesirable.

Toro recycler will start until primed gas is consumed.
ANSWER : I had similar problem and cleaned the spark plug and that seemed to have worked, but I think that may be a temporary fix because the engine still seems to be running unevenly. I feel that it must be a larger problem with the carb. If anyone can help this novice to adjust the carb or clean both carb and filter, or offer other solutions I would appreciate your assistance.

Toro 6.5hp 22″ Recycler model#20072
Self-prpel
ANSWER : John, adjusting the cable would have been my first suggestion as well, there are two screws accesible from under the deck to get the black cover off (one of them is in a corner and may be hard to see). Once you get the cover off you may be able to see if you may have a tension problem, belt problem, etc. Goodluck!
