Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
HELLO,You can fix these yourself, all you have to do is to follow the instructions below,1 Remove the spark plug lead from the spark plug and move away from cylinder head. Always do this before attempting any repairs to a lawnmower.2 If your lawnmower is a “four stroke” mower (separate gasoline and oil), tip the mower so that the spark plug is pointing skyward. Never tip it on its side with the spark plug to the ground.3 If your lawnmower is “2 stroke” (oil and gasoline mixed) turn off fuel tap. You can tip a two stroke mower any way that is suitable to you.4 To change a blade, or blade disc, it is often easier to remove the spark plug and feed a length of string into the cylinder head to ‘lock’ the piston while trying to un-do the blade bolt(s).5 Check the motor’s “air filter” while doing this sort of maintenance as a dirty or clogged air filter will affect engine performance and increase fuel consumption of your mower. Symptoms of a clogged air filter include inability to start, starting and quickly stopping after several sputters, or a weak idle. You may also see oily or smoky exhaust.6 If your mower is a “four stroke” model, change the oil at least once a year. When it is tipped over with the spark plug in the air, is a good time to remove the “oil fill” plug and drain oil into an old ice-cream container for recycling.I hope this will help to solve the problem…..

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas. If this doesn`t work, you might need a new fuel filter.
The fuel filter might be clogged. A clogged fuel filter is most commonly caused by leaving old fuel in the lawn mower. Over time, some of the ingredients in the fuel may evaporate, leaving behind a thicker, stickier substance. This sticky fuel can clog up the fuel filter and make the engine hard to start.
If the starter motor spins but does not crank the engine, you likely have a problem with… Faulty or damaged battery. To address this issues, check the battery and charging system for problems.
If you find that your lawnmower keeps dying, or keeps stalling while cutting grass, then inspect the spark plugs. Look for signs of damage or wear. Something as simple as a cracked porcelain insulator can mean an electrode has been damaged or burned away.
A Dirty Carburetor Can Cause a Lawnmower To Start Then Die

By far, the most common issue that causes a stalled motor is a dirty carburetor. The carburetor on your engine is the thing that draws in air and mixes it with the fuel. Contrary to what the movies might make you think, gasoline itself is not very flammable.

A dirty carburetor is one of the most common causes for a lawn mower not being able to start after sitting unused for months or years at a time.

I have a Crafstman Riding mower model #917.273643. That ran fine one second, I shut it off for five minutes. When I went to start it back up it wouldn’t start. Cranks fine, checked the wires, fuse, and spark plug. The plug was dirty so I cleaned it. But I am not getting any spark. I bought a new plug still no spark. I also checked the plug on another motor and I had spark so the plug wasn’t bad. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this or what may be wrong?

Lawn mower cranck but wont start…
ANSWER : Since you already checked for spark and air I would drain all the fuel out of it and check that fuel for water. Over time some lawn mowers end up with contaminated fuel. You can see the water sitting on the bottom of the fuel if you let it stand for a bit in a small plastic bowl.

Be sure to empty and dry out you fuel can as well. Especially if the mower stopped running right after a refuel. Which is a good sign your gas can is contaminated too.

I have trouble starting a toro walk behind mower
ANSWER : All, I thought my carb was shot, so I replaced it. Still, start but no run (and had to use starting fluid). THEN!!! I noticed the spring to the “rev limiter” (just below and towards rear of carb) was not “tight”. The stupid bracket that holds the end of that spring had been bent down ~1/16″ and that caused all this heartache. CHECK YOUR REV LIMITER!!!
