How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

There are 4 safety interlock switches on our lawn and garden tractors. The locations vary slightly between Step-Thru® and box frame tractors. See Step Thru Riding Mower for help identifying a Step-Thru® frame tractor.
Blown Fuse

If your lights don`t illuminate on either side and your brake light switch is good, then the next thing to check is the brake light fuse. Locate your vehicle`s fuse box, which is usually under the hood or on the kick panel inside the passenger compartment.

If your brake switch malfunctions, the rear brake lights won`t illuminate, and the driver behind you won`t know that you`re slowing down, causing a major safety hazard. Now, this could indicate that a brake light bulb in the rear has burnt out or that you`ve got a defective brake light switch.
You can see your brake light switch by looking under the dash, near the top of the brake pedal. The brake light switch is usually attached to a small bracket that holds the switch, activated when the pedal is depressed, in position.
The seat safety switch looks like a four-pronged plug with a push button on top. Inside, the base of the button has two sets of contacts. One set completes a circuit between two of the blades and another completes the circuit between the second pair. One pair connects to the engine and the other is grounded.
In order to release the stick and, therefore, the parking brake, the driver must press a button on the top of the lever while pushing the brake back down into its flattened position.
Safety switches operate both automatically, protecting against circuit faults, and manually in the case of a needed emergency stop or for planned maintenance and repairs.
The switch prevents the engine from starting when not in park or neutral. This eleiminates the risk of starting an automatic car in drive or reverse mode. Located in the linkage or the transmission box, a bad neutral safety switch can cause irreversible damage to your car`s engine and transmission.
If the switch is on `OFF`, this means it has tripped. Some new systems will only click off half way when they trip, therefore take a good look to see what your safety switch is doing. If it is still on, but your power is off, then your safety switch is not the issue.
When your brakes lock up, your vehicle may veer sharply to the left or right. The back end could fishtail, causing you to lose control. If this happens as you drive, pump the brakes consistently until you come to a complete stop.
How does ABS work? An ABS system works by using sensors to calculate each individual wheel`s rotation speed. If the sensors detect one or multiple wheels are rotating at different speeds, it will activate the ABS system to level this out by reducing the brake pressure for that particular wheel(s).
A defective switch cannot complete the circuit that the engine needs to operate. The circuit can be “jumped” with the switch removed and the tractor will start and run — with or without with the operator seated. Manufacturers, however, caution strongly against overriding the inexpensive, easily replaced switch.
Go to the switchboard and press the `TEST` or `T` button on the safety switch. This test simulates an unsafe situation – like a person receiving an electric shock from faulty equipment. The switch should flick to the off position, cutting the power to the powerpoints connected to that circuit.
In bypass starting, you touch a wrench or a screwdriver to the terminals of the starter motor, to the solenoid of a tractor, or to other equipment. This bypasses all tractor-neutral starting switches. Sparks fly and electricity snaps as the circuit is completed, the starter engages and the engine starts.

Lawn mower cranck but wont start…
ANSWER : Since you already checked for spark and air I would drain all the fuel out of it and check that fuel for water. Over time some lawn mowers end up with contaminated fuel. You can see the water sitting on the bottom of the fuel if you let it stand for a bit in a small plastic bowl.

Be sure to empty and dry out you fuel can as well. Especially if the mower stopped running right after a refuel. Which is a good sign your gas can is contaminated too.

I have trouble starting a toro walk behind mower
ANSWER : All, I thought my carb was shot, so I replaced it. Still, start but no run (and had to use starting fluid). THEN!!! I noticed the spring to the “rev limiter” (just below and towards rear of carb) was not “tight”. The stupid bracket that holds the end of that spring had been bent down ~1/16″ and that caused all this heartache. CHECK YOUR REV LIMITER!!!

I have a Crafstman Riding mower model #917.273643. That ran fine one second, I shut it off for five minutes. When I went to start it back up it wouldn’t start. Cranks fine, checked the wires, fuse, and spark plug. The plug was dirty so I cleaned it. But I am not getting any spark. I bought a new plug still no spark. I also checked the plug on another motor and I had spark so the plug wasn’t bad. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this or what may be wrong?
ANSWER : Sounds like your coil went bad
