The Jaws of Life has four main types of hydraulic rescue tools: spreaders, cutters, rams and combination tools. Each serves a vital function in the extrication process.
IT consists of four main components — cutters, spreaders, rams, and the power source. Before the tool was invented, first responders generally used saws to cut open car frames after they crashed. These were known to create sparks on occasion, which increased the risk of fires and even explosions.
Negligence Can Lead to Liability. The Jaws of Life are designed to minimize the risks to the people inside the vehicle. However, if used recklessly or negligently, they can still end up hurting the occupants in ways that they would not have been hurt from just the crash.
They have metal blades (often made of hard steel) that can cut through even the most difficult metals. The hydraulic power that operates them puts forth an amazing amount of pressure, so they can chomp away at anything they`re applied to.
Hydraulic rescue tools, also known as jaws of life, are used by emergency rescue personnel to assist in the extrication of victims involved in vehicle accidents, as well as other rescues in small spaces.

Superior ergonomics and durability assure efficient rescue operations. Spreading force: up to 57,550 lbs (256 kN). Pulling force: up to 11,500 lbs (51 kN). Spreading distance: 28.3″ (720 mm).
A spreader is a device used for lifting containers and unitized cargo. The spreader is placed between the container and the lifting machine. The spreader used for containers has a locking mechanism at each corner that attaches to the four corners of the container.
HURST is the only manufacturer of the Jaws of Life brand.
A tool with two arms that come together with a narrow tip, it uses hydraulic pressure to separate the arms. Commonly used in rescue operations to separate doors, they can also be used in heavy equipment maintenance, metal seals replacement and many more applications.
Hydraulic spreaders are ideal for prising open mangled car doors and panels. Especially when you need access to disconnect the vehicle`s battery. They`re also effective for opening jammed doors in buildings, separating parts of machinery, and lifting heavy parts.
Spreaders are specialty surgical instruments designed to aid in the separation of bones and tissues without causing trauma. Bone spreaders commonly feature pads or discs.
Industry and rescue services use hydraulic spreaders to lift or push heavy loads. For example, a hydraulic spreader works for pipe and flange repair or to pull apart sections of a vehicle to gain access to anyone trapped inside. Hydraulic spreaders typically generate enough force to lift loads of multiple tons.
