The compression ratio of any Briggs and Stratton L head engine should be 6:1.
Unfortunately, engines don`t come with their proper compression stamped on the outside. But a good rule of thumb says that each cylinder in a mechanically sound engine should have compression of 130 psi or higher.
Four-Stroke Cycle SI Engine
In the SI engine, fuel is mixed with air, broken up into a mist, and partially vaporized. The compression ratio varies from 4:1 to 8:1, and the air–fuel mixture ratio varies from 10:1 to 20:1. The four strokes of a petrol engine sucking fuel–air mixture are shown in Fig. 2.2.
In air conditioning applications, compression ratios of 2.3:1 to 3.5:1 are common, with ratios below 3:1 and above 2:1 as the standard for modern high-efficiency air conditioning equipment. In a 404a medium-temp refrigeration (cooler) application, 3.0:1 – 5.5:1 is a common ratio range.
Every compressor manufacturer has a unique method for adjusting the VE equation and “− RC” is just one simple method. Compression ratio (RC) typically varies from 1.3 to 3.5 so the − RC term reduces VE (capacity) by 1.3%–3.5%. There can be a concern with VE being too low.
As a rule, most engines should have 140 to 160 lbs. of cranking compression with no more than 10% difference between any of the cylinders. Low compression in one cylinder usually indicates a bad exhaust valve. Low compression in two adjacent cylinders typically means you have a bad head gasket.
Compression loss is a result of a leak in one or more of the cylinders caused by normal engine wear and tear. If you experience compression loss in one cylinder of the engine, it can cause misfiring and poor vehicle performance. A decrease in power output is a sign of worn-out internal parts.
60 psi is enough compression for a 5hp Briggs to run.

ANSWER : Check compression, should be over 90psi to start. And check spark. The loud pop I am going to assume came from the exhaust, which if you lost spark would cause excess gas to ignite. Causes of no spark, bad coil, or defective and or damaged safty swith.

Can i replace a 17.5 hp mower engine with a 18 hp engine?
ANSWER : You will need to shop carefully. That is not too much of a power jump to worry about ruining axles, gears and the like. BUT, do be mindful that you have to shop an engine to match two very important criteria:Bolt patterns and spacing: This is how the engine will attach to the mower’s deck/chasis.Output shaft length, diameter, taper and if it’s keyed or non-keyed.If looking to just replace a tired old iron horse, similar make and model to the original with slight power upgrade cannot be helped – but the bolts and shafts will be pretty much spot on.
