Does size really matter when it comes to fuel lines? According to the fuel delivery system experts at Fuelab, it does. It`s because fuel line size and length have a direct effect on the amount of fuel pressure drop your fuel system will experience.
Your fuel line should be about the same. Too long and your engine may have trouble scavenging for fuel. This makes it difficult to tune the engine.
Automobile manufacturers build in about a gallon (3.8 liters) of reserve fuel beyond the “empty” line.
Observe the fuel pressure gauge while the engine runs and after shutting off the engine. Fuel pressure should hold to specs, while the engine is running, and after turning off the engine. With the engine off, pressure should hold for about 5 minutes.
The basic leak-down test

A second test is to turn the key to off and see how long the pressure holds. For the specification we must consult service-data, but the system should hold some pressure for about five-minutes.

According to the American Petroleum Institute the gas-pump hose typically retains about one third of a gallon of fuel.
It`s primary purpose is to return excess fuel from the carburetor to the fuel pump, however it serves other important functions as well. Aside from providing a path for excess fuel to return to the tank, the fuel return hose also prevents vapor lock and over pressurization from occurring within the carburetor.
PTFE Lined Hose is the best soft hose you can use and generally has a braided stainless or braided nylon exterior. The PTFE liner blocks fuel vapors and slows the degradation process. PTFE Braided Hoses require Special Fittings.
Another, more serious symptom of an issue with the vehicle`s fuel injection lines is visible fuel leaks. If any of the lines wear out and rupture it will cause the vehicle to leak fuel. Leaky fuel lines will produce drips, or in more serious cases, puddles of fuel on the undersides of the vehicle.
Lightly tighten the nut until you feel wrench resistance, approximately 30-inch pounds will be needed.
“Fuel lines should be separated from hot exhaust stacks by a minimum distance of 1 1/4 inch to prevent heat damage and possible fuel vaporization.”
A 3/8”id fuel line can easily support 600 HP given sufficient “pump head”! Given a big enough pump a 3/8” steel line could support 1000 HP. The simple way to know is to install an electronic fuel pressure gauge. If the pressure falls as the engine RPM`s go up you need more pump head.

I need to replace to fuel lines on a Craftman 32cc trimmer. The old ones cracked apart. 2 of the lines look like 1/8″ OD one line looks like 3/32″ OD. Larger line looks like it hooks to filter, Smaller line to a fitting in the gas tank. I am assuming the smaller line ges to the primer inlet. My question is the lines penetrate the bottom of the gas tank. How do they seal. How do I install the filter and the fitting. I am assuming to thread the new lines in from the bottom of the tank and pull through the gas cap hole. Then I attach filter or fitting and pull back through. So do I pull the line so as to create a seal from the swell caused by the fitting/filter?
ANSWER : Depending on the brand of line you use, Tygon line is self sealing but seems to shrink faster then factory supplied because of the ethanol in the gas. The stone gas filter is designed to fall to the lowest part of the tank, not stop the line from falling out.

Fuel line goes into tank bottom line has filter how long is the top fuel line? this is coming from the primer bulb.
ANSWER : Fuel Line Replacement by SmallEng.com

The hose in the tank with the filter on the free end connects directly to the carburetor input connection.
If the saw is equipped with a primer bulb, an output line from the carburetor connects to the suction side of the primer (once the bulb is collapsed it draws fuel from the tank through the carburetor to refill as it inflates).
The pressure side of the primer returns displaced fuel to the tank as it is depressed.
Take lots of notes and a few digital photographs to help with reassembly.

The line with the filter needs to be long enough to reach all parts of the tank as the saw is moved, a little to long is probably better than to short. The line returning from the primer is not critical so long as it cannot fall out (mid tank). All the primer line does is return excess fuel to the tank. Does this answer your question?

I have a husqvarna 323L string trimmer. I stored it after running the tank & carb dry for about two years. I fueled it, then started it, & it ran for a minute then died like I turned the switch off. Since it would not restart, I found the fuel filter had broken off the hardened fuel line & it sucked gummy crap out of the tank & into the carb. Failing at cleaning the carb, I finally put a new carb on it & replaced the pump, hoses & filter. It has ran good till this year. I winterized it with stabilizer & left it with a full tank over the winter. The gas in the tank was gone when I got ready to use it this year. I filled the tank with premix, checked for leaks, then started it. It would run fine for about half a tank, start idling poorly (lean) then cutoff & refuse to restart till I refilled the tank. I finally found the tank had cracks & was letting pressure out of the tank & apparently this was causing the carb to lose it’s ability to siphon gas out of the tank. So I replaced the tank which came with new hoses & a filter, which I properly installed to the carb. It cranked right up, but when it runs a half tank, the carb quits sucking gas out of the tank. When I pump to prime the carb, it moves the fuel into the carb, but the pump never gets hard like it does when I prime the carb when the motor is cold. I have to keep refilling the tank, prime, & then it starts & runs until the tank gets about half empty. The new fuel filter is down in the gas tank properly, but It will not run after it shuts off until I refill the tank & prime. I’m baffled. New tank, new hoses, new filter, new carb, & I can find no leaks in the fuel system. It runs strong. The 323L is a two-stroke & it always cranks on the second pull from cold on a full tank. Any ideas?

Which fuel line “port/inlet” on the Walbro wt-380 goes to the fuel tank? It’s on a Craftsman 25cc Gas “Weed Wacker” Line Trimmer purchased in 2002. It has Walbro WT-380 carburetor with external primer bulb. The carb has two inlets for attaching fuel lines – one to gas tank, one to primer bulb. One inlet is on diaphragm side of carb (side with the two Low/High speed adjustment screws). Other inlet is on “reservoir?” side (side with air/fuel mixture screw). Which inlet gets the “fuel tank line”? (Other will obviously go to primer bulb. I found all kinds of diagrams on web but none that showed this. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. (Problem occurs when replacing gas lines and forget which line goes where:)
ANSWER : Usually the line with the filter on it that comes from the tank goes to carb. inlet first which is most likely close to the bottom side of the carb.nearest to the engine, then the outlet or return line on the carb.goes to the inlet side of the primer and the outlet side of the primer goes back to the tank. The primer draws fuel through the carb to the primer to the tank if its not? then correct the line connections until it does

The fuel lines have rotted out of the edger gas tank. How do I fix or do I need to replace entire tank with new fuel lines?Since there are no male fuel line connections exiting the fuel tank and just two holes where the lines were, I guess I need to replace the entire tank and get a new one with lines already attached. Thanks.
ANSWER : No you can buy replacement fuel line but you must reconnect the filter in the tank that line goes to the bottom of the carby then out the top of the carby to the inlet on the primer then out of the primer and back to the tank.

Need diagram for fuel line in tank fuel filter
ANSWER : The small diameter fuel line that has the fuel filter in the tank on it goes directly to the carburetor (with the built-in primer or externally mounted primer). IF the carb has the external primer, the small line goes to the nipple on the carburetor opposite the end with the hole in the cover. If it has the built-in primer on it, it goes to the carb body on the nipple furthest from the bulb. The large diameter line is the fuel return line and if the carb has the bulb on it, this line connects on the nipple closest to primer bulb.. With the externally mounted primer, this line connects on the longest nipple coming out of the primer and goes to the fuel tank (not the filter though). There is a nylon connector inside the tank that holds this larger line in place. The shorter nipple on primer bulb has a smaller diameter fuel line connected to it and connects to the nipple on the carb closest to the end with the hole in the cover. Built in primer has 2 fuel lines…externally mounted has 3.
