Recoil start
When the rope`s grip is pulled, the rope uncoils, tensions the spring, engages the clutch and turns the crankshaft, spinning it to crank or start the engine before the end of the pull stroke. The running of the engine then disengages the clutch.
The coil spring absorbs the shocks applied to the front idler when the machine meets an obstacle. In addition, it corrects the tension on the chain by injecting grease into the cylinder. This occurs through a control valve that allows the recoil spring to move forward thanks to the hydraulic pressure.
The impact load of the steel cylinder on the recoil spring is provided by the power spring. The steel cylinder compresses the power spring to store energy. After release, the potential energy of the spring is converted to the kinetic energy of the steel cylinder.
If you measure 18-3/4-in., it`s a 20-inch saw. The true bar length is a second, less commonly used measurement. If you need this to get a perfect fit for your replacement bar, here`s how to do it: Loosen the bolts that hold the bar to the chainsaw body.
#4 (1/8″ Diameter) and #4-1/2 (9/64″ Diameter) rope is used on most chain saws and larger 2-cycle engines.
The recoil spring controls the force needed to move the slide back and the speed with which it will close. Lightening the spring will cause the slide to move rearward more quickly after a shot, and close with less force after. A heavier spring will have the opposite effect.
Place your hands as high up on the backstrap as possible, keep your palms firmly placed on the gun, and position your thumbs forward. This will create a solid first point of contact for the recoil to enter your body and begin the management journey.

ANSWER : I have the same probelm
I start twice (when I pull starter rope) then the rope won’t go back

ANSWER : Your starter/recoil unit has malfunctioned. Disassembly/inspection down to the point where you can get the recoil off will be required. Remove the engine cover screws. The recoil unit may be part of the cover or may be under it. You will easily be able to access it. Replacement parts for your mower are readily available.

Cord will not recoil – Poulan 14" Chainsaw
ANSWER : Sounds like the starter return spring may have broken, remove the starter, remove the centre fixing screw for the pulley, be aware when removing the pulley there is a coil spring behind, alaways wear safety glasses, once removed you can check the condition of the return spring, new springs come in a keeper, so they are fairly easy to fit
When i pull the cord all it does is makes a clicking noise but doesnt start
ANSWER : You need to remove the recoil starter, There are two plastic pawls or (dogs), that engage the starter cup when you pull the starter rope. It sounds like they or it (the last one), came off and was ground up by the fly wheel. The only way to know is to remove the plastic, shroud and you will see if you have broken pieces of plastic, usually white, in there. If so you need two new ones and the clips.
I have an MTD Snow Thrower Model 2M1 with a broken starter rope. I replaced the rope but cannot get it to rewind the rope after I pull it. What am I missing when I reinstall the rope and spool?
ANSWER : When you have the starter top removed, you must wind the spring BEFORE installing the rope. Wind the pulley until it is at maximum tension, then unwind it until the hole in the pulley lines up with the eyelet on the starter top. Now, put the rope thru the eyelet and into the pulley hole. It is helpful to have somebody holding the tension on the pulley, or you can insert a small tool thru the vent holes to hold the pulley in place. Use a figure 8 knot on the rope. Go ahead and tie the handle onto the other end of the rope, and release the pulley tension. It should now recoil into the starter housing. Test pull the rope several times to make sure it is moving freely. Reinstall the starter housing onto the engine and retest.
Good luck!
