Chainsaw chains stretch during normal operation and begin to sag on a saw`s guide bar. If a chainsaw chain is allowed to become too loose, it can easily come off the bar during operation and create an unsafe situation for the user. Chainsaw chain tension should be checked and tightened often.
Generally speaking, the chain should be a little loose on the chain saw guide bar, but not loose enough that the drive links come out of the bar nose. The bar links should feel like they are raising up, but not actually come out of the guide bar.
Attempting to turn the tension screw without loosening the nuts first may be the reason you can`t tighten the chain. Tighten the nuts back into place when you have the chain properly adjusted.
Chain Tension

To change the tension loosen one of the axle-nuts and move the wheel forward or backward slightly and snug it up again. Then, loosen the opposite axle-nut, adjust and tighten, making sure the wheel remains centered in the frame. Re-check tension. A chain tensioner can make the process easier.

If your chain is too tight, it will cause excessive wear on the sprockets and chain and unnecessary strain on the engine. If your chain is too loose, it can jump off the sprockets, which can cause a crash.
There is a tension screw located near the base of the bar on the chainsaw. To tighten the chain, turn it clockwise, and to loosen turn it counterclockwise. Don`t over-tighten the chain as this could cause it to break.

Chain keeps coming off – Remington Electric Chain Saw
ANSWER : Normally, a loose chain will enhance it’s ability to jump off when trimming small branches. When installing and/or adjusting a chain;1) install the chain, bar, and cover, and install the cover nut loosely2) support the ‘nose’ end of the bar with a block3) tighten the chain until it touches the bottom of the bar, and then tighen the adjuster 1/8 of a turn more. *this will make the chain just a LITTLE snug4) tighten the cover nut, and then by hand CAREFULLY rotate the chain. If you cannot rotate by hand, it is too tight. re-adjsut
** This proceedure must be used on ANY brand chain saw. Here is why. If the bar nose is not lifted upon adjustment, when cutting, the nose will move upward, the chain will have a ‘droop’ away from the bar and appear to have loosened while cutting. Any contact with a small branch will flip the chain off of the bar. If you re-adjust it improperly, the same senerio will occur the next cut.

Chain saw chain is loose
ANSWER : Loosen the side cover nuts, then turn the adjuster CW to bring the chain up to the lower edge of the bar, then check to see if the chain will move fairly easily by hand. Tighten the clamp nuts and recheck tension. If chain seems to get loose quickly again, it may not be sharpened correctly causing heat to build in the chain. You should see no reflection of light from the cutting edges if filed correctly and the saw should require very little pressure for it to cut rapidly. Hope this helps!
