How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

The most obvious way of differentiating between a bolt and a screw is that a bolt is not usually threaded all the way along its shank as it has a plain portion. A screw, however, is threaded fully to the head.
Doweling. Doweling is another old-school joinery method, whereby two or more round sticks of wood, known as dowels, are inserted into corresponding holes in two adjoining boards to hold them together. It is essentially a butt joint with hidden dowels that reinforce the joint.
Mortise and tenon joints are a classic method of wood joinery known for both strength and elegance. A peg, or tenon, is cut into the end of one board to fit snugly into a hole, or mortise, on the adjoining piece of stock for a strong joint.
Wood bolts are large screws explicitly designed for joining two pieces of wood together. Unlike traditional screws, they have a flanged head that prevents them from sinking into the material they`re being used on. This makes them ideal for connecting two pieces of wood without damaging either part.
Apply a thin coating of glue to both edges of each joint. That`s a THIN coat of glue to BOTH faces of the joint. As you engage the pieces together, gently rub the lap joint back and forth with each piece, squeezing them “level” to one another.

The auger from a model 917.881053 snow thrower got pulled out from the gearbox housing (broke the housing). I have replacement housing covers and a gasket, but I am unsure how to re-install the impeller shaft to the worm gear and seal them inside the gear housing. There are a number of bushings, washers, and o-rings on the shaft. From the design of the gearbox housing, it appears that the 3/4 flange bushing (part # 174700) is secured inside the housing in the slot. I am also thinking that the o-ring (part # 174699) should be secured in the housing slot next to the flange bushing to effectively seal the gearbox housing from loosing grease. Is this correct?

I am also having trouble finding auger gearbox grease. The owner’s manual says to use Ronex ED #1 grease. I can only find N.L.G.I. greases of grades 1 and 2. Is the N.L.G.I. grade 1 the type I should use?

ANSWER : The O ring you speak of should be in a groove/slot, just inside the bushing, (note thoroughly examine the bushing to make sure of no damage or excessive wear)…you are correct, and the NLGI #1 has all the certifications that the Rondex ED has plus 1, so if anything, the grease you are asking about will exceed mfg recomendations. Good Luck! I hope you find this to be very helpful!
