How do you check/adjust the diesel injection timing on a Yanmar 3TN engine?
Experienced gardeners share their insights in answering this question :
You should not have to adjust the timing. If it’s not running good then you either have a fuel problem[plugged fuel filter or leaking rubber fuel lines]or you need to check the injecters. To check them start the engine and loosen the injecter lines on the injecters one at a time to determine which injecter needs to be replaced. The injecter that makes no differance to the way the engine sounds is the one you need to replace.

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

You can check the injection timing by measuring the injector pump`s stroke at TDC using a dial indicator.
There are several ways you can adjust injection timing, depending on the type of engine you have and how old it is. The most common ways to adjust injection timing are programming the ECM, adjusting the fuel injection pump, replacing the camshaft, and replacing the cam followers or gaskets.
The primary method of checking fuel pump timing would be using the manufacturer`s instructions of setting the fuel pump with the engine stopped. For the Bosch type fuel pumps, a small window is present at the base of the fuel pump. Within this window an engraved line can be seen on the spring holder of the fuel pump.
Clues that the timing is too advanced would be hard cranking, the engine tries to kick back when cranking, rough idle can be caused by too much advance, and detonation is another sign of too much advance.
The optimum injection timing to obtain the great brake power is at the peak in-cylinder pressure, in case of less peak pressure (advanced or delay) leads to lower cylinder temperature and hence less brake power.
Throttle Position Sensors

Essentially, throttle position sensors provide data about how a car is being driven and the power demands being placed on the engine in-the-moment. “Syncing” throttle behavior with fuel injection timing using this sensor ensures vehicles idle smoothly and accelerate on-demand.

Advancing. Advancing the timing means that you are changing when the combustion process will take place in relation to the piston`s position. By advancing the injection timing, the combustion process will take place before the manufacturer initially intended it to. Doing this should increase horsepower.
In addition, late injection timing increases the BSNOx and BSUHC emissions because of the lower quality of combustion process at that operating condition.
With advancing injection timing, the ignition delay will be longer and speed of the flame will be shorter. These cause reduction of maximum pressure and engine output power. Therefore, fuel consumption per output power will increase.
Bad injector timing

Bad fuel injection timing may lead to low engine performance and can cause the engine to misfire. It can also cause overconsumption of fuel, loss of power, and excess smoke production.

Injection site reactions are usually mild when they do occur. However, sometimes they can indicate something more serious, like an infection or allergic reaction. High fever, swelling, drainage from the injection site, severe pain, or a whole-body response are all reasons to see a healthcare provider for an evaluation.

How can I restart my 4020 diesel after it ran out of diesel?
ANSWER : Crack open the line coming into the injection pump from the fuel pump (near the top of inj. pump, towards firewall). Pump the lever on fuel pump until fuel comes out of loosened line. Tighten line. Loosen at least two injector lines at injection pump head. Crank engine with starter until fuel pulses from loosened lines. Tighten lines. Crank engine again. Engine should begin firing on these cylinders first, followed by the remaining cylinders.

ANSWER : Good question first you need to find top dead center.if you cant find any marking on cam shaft remove spark plug. place thumb over hole and gentle pull motor over first will be suction next you will feel compression agaist your thumb this will be the power stroke as you pull motor over note when you first feel this and when this stops .this will give you a ball park idea of TDC.align the ignition system to fire here
