Valves can also stick for a number of reasons, such as deposits from oil or fuel, or weakened valve springs. A stuck valve will not only create performance problems—it could also cause a piston to make contact with the seat, causing major damage.
The effect of setting the valve lash too tight can result in the valve not fully closing on the seat. This will allow cylinder pressure to escape along with high-temperature combustion gases. It is possible then for the temperature of the valve head and valve seat to become so high that rapid burning can occur.
Using the air hose, insert it into the 9⁄16-inch hole wooden block and release compressed air into the cylinder port. Using the compressed air/water method, you will actually be able to see bubbles forming past a bent valve on the intake or exhaust side—the larger the leak, the bigger the bubbles.
Unfortunately, yes you can do more damage by continuing to drive with damaged valves. The misfire will cause damage to the catalytic converter, which is a critical emission device.
Camshaft with pushrods

As the crankshaft rotates, each valve is opened by means of a tappet, pushrod and rocker arm.

Engine performance issues: if the valve is stuck open the vehicle`s air-fuel ratio will be disrupted causing engine performance issues such as reduced power, poor acceleration and rough idle. It may also produce turbo boost pressure leaks, causing the turbo to work harder.
Exhaust valves and air intake valves at the top of the cylinder can also get overheated, and leak gas or the valve seals can become too worn to seal the gas in properly. Either way, the result is often low compression. Several valve problems can lead to low compression.
