How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

Disconnected, dirty or fouled spark plugs are common causes for engines that won`t start. For small engines, spark plugs typically need to be replaced every season or after 25 hours of use. You should also check to make sure the spark plug gap is set correctly.
Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten. Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace. Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas. If this doesn`t work, you might need a new fuel filter.
Briggs And Stratton Lawn Mower Engine Locked Up

Common causes of this type of engine lock-up include a lack of oil in the engine, incorrect fuel and spark plug misfiring.

A Dirty Carburetor Can Cause a Lawnmower To Start Then Die

By far, the most common issue that causes a stalled motor is a dirty carburetor. The carburetor on your engine is the thing that draws in air and mixes it with the fuel. Contrary to what the movies might make you think, gasoline itself is not very flammable.

How Mechanical Governors Work. A mechanical governor uses flyweights to create a force based off of crankshaft speed which is balanced by the force of the governor spring. The top engine speed is varied by increasing the spring force to run faster or decreasing the force to run slower.
The lawnmower governor is designed to maintain the engine speed set by the throttle lever, regardless of the load imposed. When the engine slows down while cutting through thick grass, the governor opens the throttle automatically, thus maintaining the preset engine speed.
To raise the pressure settings, turn the adjusting screw counter-clockwise. To lower the pressure settings, turn the adjusting screw clockwise. Note: Be careful not to over adjust. Each 1/4 turn of the adjusting screw raises or lowers the pressure setting approximately 4 psi.
This is all controlled by the crankshaft – which spins quickly under a light load and slowly when the engine is working harder. When the crankshaft spins quickly, the flyweights open up, putting pressure on the governor cup and crank.
As your engine runs, the governor gear is constantly spinning and forcing the fly weights outward. This, in turn, pushes on the tab of the governor cross shaft. The governor cross shaft is forced to rotate and moves the governor arm toward your carburetor to close the throttle. As the throttle closes, the RPMs slow.

Very very hard to start – Craftsman 675 Torque 190cc 21" Briggs Stratton RearBag Push Lawn Mower (CA) ()
ANSWER : First did you hit something with your machine while it was running? Check your blade to see if it is tight up against the crank shaft. If the blade comes loose the engine doesn’t have the momentum to keep turning inorder to start. If the blade is tight , then I would check the timing. This would involve the shear key. It is located between the flywheel and the top of the crankshaft. Remove the top cover to your engine, and any other stuff attached to cover. You will see the fly wheel. Remove the flywheel and look at the key that I mentioned before. If it is slightly dented this is your problem. GOOD LUCK.
