The 330 I just looked at has an inboard clutch, I am reasonably sure the nut is a left handed thread for the same reason the actual clutch is. A right handed thread would unscrew itself. I post this just because it is informative.

This video is only a couple of minutes long and I think worth a view.

I suggest a length of nylon rope (nothing left behind) as a piston stop (retain 6″ ± so you can remove it). Make sure the piston is near the top of the cylinder before feeding the cord or it can fall through the exhaust port and damage the piston as it rises.
Everyone I have ever removed had a left handed thread (tighten it to loosen it).
If the rope falls through the exhaust port it can break the piston just above the ring. You start the saw the piece comes loose and eats your P&C. The odds of it occurring are doubtless slim. If the odds are 1 in 500 and you turn out to be the 500th do you care how slim they were?

In case you need an IPL for your saw it can be found here:

Yours is pretty simple just find 330 (I suspect clutch detail is the same for all 13, but defer the choice to you.) HTH

IMO you need not torque the nut down. I think it will seat itself with time. If you decide to torque it, remove the rope, turn the crank backward (CW on flywheel side) until the piston is again on the rise and above the exhaust port for the same reason.

How to Identify and Fix Common Gardening Problems ?

We provide a variety of viewpoints on how to identify and fix common gardening problems. Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced gardeners :

The chain sprocket must be replaced if the depth of the wear marks reaches about 0.5mm, i.e. the wear limit. A seriously worn chain sprocket can cause the chainsaw chain and guide bar to wear at an increased rate, as well as reducing cutting performance too, so it`s important to keep an eye on.
STIHL chain sprockets are made from wear-resistant steel and are designed to transmit the power from the engine to the saw chain with as little loss as possible. The teeth of the chain sprocket press against the drive link tanks and the saw chain starts to rotate.
To remove the pulley or sprocket, the friction lock the pulley or sprocket has on the shaft must be broken. The positive aspect of the tapered shaft arrangement is: Once the friction lock on the pulley or sprocket is released, the pulley or sprocket will slide off the shaft easily.
To disengage the clutch, the release bearing is moved toward the flywheel by the clutch fork. As the bearing contacts the pressure plate`s release fingers, it begins to rotate with the pressure plate assembly.
There are two types of sprockets – spur sprockets and rim and sprockets. These can sit inside the clutch (inboard) or outside the clutch (outboard). With some chainsaws you have both options. With other chainsaws you can only have one or the other.
Sprocket size is shown: chain pitch “by” the number of teeth. For example, 3/8″ x 7 references a sprocket that is 3/8″ pitch with 7 teeth.
The pitch of the chain must match the pitch of the drive sprocket / drive rim and this must match the end sprocket of the bar. If these elements don`t match then damage will occur.
Typically, the sprockets are secured to the shaft using an ANSI standard dimensioned keyway and one or more set screws. The ANSI standards provide a keyway of specific length, width and depth for a given shaft diameter.
A puller is a tool used to remove parts such as bearings, pulleys or gears from a shaft.
To increase low end power, you should increase size of rear sprocket or decrease size of front sprocket. To increase top speed, you should reduce size of rear sprocket or increase size of front sprocket.
The purpose of changing sprocket sizes is to alter the relationship between engine speed on your tachometer and road speed on your speedometer.
The clutch is an essential component of a manual transmission. It allows you to smoothly engage and disengage the gears. If you try to shift gears without using the clutch, you may damage the transmission or cause the vehicle to stall. Never let the engine stall.
The clutch is designed to engage and disengage the connection between the engine flywheel and the transmission input shaft. The clutch is operated by pushing on the clutch pedal inside the vehicle, which causes the clutch to disengage, and as the pedal is released the clutch will engage.
Actuation system. To disconnect the clutch or let go of the torque, you have an actuation system that starts at the pedal and ends at the clutch cover assembly. The thrust bearing in a 3-piece clutch kit is one component of the actuation system.
In a pull-type clutch, pressing the pedal pulls the release bearing to disengage the clutch. In a push-type clutch, pressing the pedal pushes the release bearing to disengage the clutch.
The first is the pitch, or the distance between drive lugs on the chain and it determines whether the chain will fit the sprocket. Most saws use 0.325″, 3/8″, or 0.404″ pitch, with 1/4″ less common. Most consumer saws use a type of 3/8″ chain called “low profile”.
There are two types of chainsaw clutches: those with the sprocket on the outside of the clutch and those with the sprocket on the inside.
Calculating the sprocket ratio

This is the number of teeth on the driving sprocket divided by the number of teeth on the driven sprocket. For example, a front sprocket on has 20 teeth and the rear sprocket has 60, the sprocket ratio is 20/60 = 1/3 = 1:3 or 3.

Modern chainsaws run two different types of sprockets; spur sprockets and centre drive sprockets. There are hundreds of variation of each of these types of sprockets.

If the teeth are worn bad enough the chain may not roll off the sprocket as it turns. This could cause the wheel to lock up and result in a uncontrolable skid. The lack of chain tension could also cause the chain to fall off and jam in the drive train. You might ruin the wheel or damage the engine and transmission.
