There are three basic sizes of shear bolts, and it`s important to select the correct one for your snowblower to ensure it fits and works correctly. Brass 1/4″ shear bolts are most commonly used on smaller, entry-level snowblowers. Black 5/16″ shear bolts are for larger mid-grade snowblowers.
A shear pin is different from a regular bolt because it is designed to break, or “shear,” which in this case is a good thing. Shear pins are made with a weak point that snaps if a jam occurs between the auger and the housing.
Remove Shear Bolts Using Torque Wrench
If you are looking for how to remove shear bolts, then using a torque wrench is the best method. This is because it will allow you to remove the bolt without damaging the surrounding area.
Often referred to as `Electronic Shear Pins`, `Torque Limiters`, or `Shock Relays`, these sensitive controls can monitor changing workloads and signal process changes and shut down motors to protect them from dangerous conditions.
Can I use a grade 8 bolt to replace the shear pin? No. Damage to the unit will occur if a higher grade bolt is used in place of the original.
These shear bolts are classified as a grade 2 bolt, which are hard enough to maintain auger rotation, yet soft enough to shear if the auger is prevented from rotating.
A split pin (cotter pin in American usage) can also be used as a shear pin.

Snow thrower backfires and stalls
ANSWER : Back-firing & stalling is usually indicative of a timing problem. In small engines this can occur if the flywheel shear pin has sheared and allows the flywheel to change timing. Fix is to full the flywheel with a puller and replace the shear pin.

I have a Toro 51598 electric leaf blower. Last year a breaker in the electrical box tripped and the blower naturally stopped. But, the episode seemed to have damaged the variable-air-flow-dial which on the blower – it was either on or off, nothing inbetween worked. This year, after some solid hours of operation, it just stopped working regardless of where where the variable-air-flow-dial was set. It is worth replacing that variable-air-flow-dial and some related components, or is there likely something else wrong with it? The bushings seem fine.
ANSWER : These machines are considered “disposable” items and most service centers won’t even repair them, saying that it is not “cost effective.” I have never come across a parts list for one other than maybe the plastic housing on them (they may exist), but costwise you may be better off getting another tool unless the Toro is still under warranty.

Electric Maztang mt 968 auger wont run – Yard Machines 28" Two-Stage Snowthrower

I own a 2 stage snow thrower by M T D, recently, I can only move it 2 feet before I have to back it off because the snow gets clogged up. There is not an unreasonable amount of snow in there either. HELP
ANSWER : Hi, I will try ro help you out. It sounds as if you probably have broken shear pins on the auger, and that is why as soon as snow gets in there the auger stops. If you look on the auger shaft you will see probably 2 bolts. They are made to break if something like big ice or debris gets in there so that parts are not broken or bending parts of the auger. All you have to do is replace the shear pins. That is what I think is wrong. That is all I can think of that it could be. All the best and good luck. Happy to answer any other questions.
