Description. Traction drive belts provide power to drive the wheels. John Deere belts contain strong material to prevent stretching and roll over which provides smooth engagement and consistent power.
The 170 Riding Lawn Tractor was produced from 1989-1990 as part of the Late 100 Lawn Series. Standard features included a 14 HP Kawasaki engine, 5 speed gear transmission, manual sector and pinion steering, and a 38″ mid mount mower deck.
Belts that are too tight put an excessive load on pulleys, shafts, and bearings. Excessive belt tension will also wear out a belt quickly. Proper belt tension is 1/2 inch of sideplay both ways. Press down on the belt midway between pulleys and observe the travel.
Belt tension is measured by plucking the belt span while holding a sensor close by. Belt tension is adjusted until the belt span frequency, or measured tension level is within manufacturer`s recommendations.
The smooth side of the belt goes on smooth pulleys (as shown on the idler pulley pictured above), while the ribbed side wraps around the grooved pulleys.
The “Deck Belt” goes around the pulleys right above the blades on the deck and then to a double pulley. The “Drive Belt” on your mower goes from the transmission, around an Idler pulley then over to the double pulley I mentioned before. The Drive belt also plays a role in making the wheels turn.
