R² Drive Link Outboard Clutch

Check at the IPL for your saw to see if any special tools are needed.
A length of starter cord or nylon rope may be used instead of the piston stop (retain 6″ ± so you can remove it). Make sure the piston is near the top of the cylinder before feeding the cord or it can fall through the exhaust port and damage the piston as it rises.
It is probably a left handed thread (tighten it to loosen it).
You didn’t provide the model number of you saw, I can’t be more specific. You can find an IPL (exploded parts list) that will list any special tools here:

There are a number of reasons why a muffler has gone bad. Due to being exposed to moisture and heat, mufflers will naturally degrade over time. Moisture causes the interior of mufflers to rust, which affects its quality. Your muffler may also go bad if your vehicle hits something that knocks against the component.
The answer is yes. With the absence of a muffler, you can still operate your lawn mower, but the sound will be louder. At this stage, no significant damage is rendered to your device.

Poulan Pro 42/18 gas Chain saw: The chain oil hole that feeds the upper slot seems to be blocked. Does that rubber assembly just pull out or does the whole area have to be taken apart. Is it gravity feed or is there a pump in there somewhere. Thanks GS
ANSWER : GS, there is a pump driven by the clutch sprocket/drum. Operate the engine with the bar off. There should be oil coming out.

a) If so, the hole in the bar is plugged with saw dust. This is very common on all brands of saws.

b) If not, then remove the clutch/drum assembly and inspect the worm gear drive of the pump.
*note, the threads on all chain saw clutches are Left Hand reverse threads.

Poulan pro 18″ saw locked up.. help
ANSWER : I had the same issue with two of these Poulan 18″ saws. I took the first one back as it never pulled to start. The second just happened today. I took the bar and chain off, then unscrewed the casing around the pull start. When I tried to manually move the fly-wheel, I couldn’t do it. After trying to take the fly wheel off, I discovered that the small black piece just to the side of the fly-wheel was pushing up against the fly wheel. I pushed this piece back while tightening the screws that had loosened around it. The pull and fly wheel have no interference now and it works like new. Hope this helps.
