If you are unsure of how your mower rotates, check the position of the discharge chute; if it is on the right side angled back, the blade turns clockwise.

To check for a damaged drive belt, locate the belt cover on the side of the mower and remove it. Inspect the belt for any signs of wear or damage, such as fraying, cracks, or missing chunks. If the belt is damaged, it will need to be replaced.

Generally, you should shift gears up when the tachometer is around “3” or 3,000 RPMs; shift down when the tachometer is around “1” or 1,000 RPMs. After some experience with driving a stick shift, you`ll be able to figure out when to shift by the way your engine sounds and “feels.” More on that below.

Three primary transmission systems are used in riding mowers and the various classes of mowing tractors. Mower decks are designed to operate at a constant speed – typically full engine speed. This means adjustments in vehicle speed have to come from the transmission, not by varying the engine speed.
Inside the transmission, an input shaft is connected with the engine, which turns the shaft; while an output shaft sends its spinning motion toward the vehicle`s wheels to turn them. The input shaft`s power drives a set of gears, called the countershaft gears.
The usual transmission has two hydraulic devices; one working as a variable displacement pump and the other working as a motor connected by hydraulic lines. The pump converts mechanical energy into pressure and the motor reconverts the pressure energy to mechanical energy.
Inside the transmission, an input shaft is connected with the engine, which turns the shaft; while an output shaft sends its spinning motion toward the vehicle`s wheels to turn them. The input shaft`s power drives a set of gears, called the countershaft gears.

Hard to shifet my poulan pro and wont go into reverse
ANSWER : Try loosening the belt tension to the transmission a little bit. Some of these are just stiff and you have to slip the clutch a little to rock them into gear.

I have had a poulan pro 550 series push mower for almost 1 year at the end of the season last year the mower would start briefly and then stop. i have cleaned out the air filter and that did not help.the mower started, i made one revolution around the yard 3/4th of the way the mower quit. I then primed the mower it started then quit and now it will not start at all. Does anyone have any suggestions of what to do. Thanks
ANSWER : There is a little spring that works the carburetor arm. If that popped off then the mower will not run.
